Exclamation Flying Deer Lands On Touch's Rex

Partially Decapitated with a Hood Scoop, here are the results:

EVERYONE WAS OK...my brother, my gf and i were returning home tonight when bad juju struck. a deer flew over the median while we traveling at highway speeds on i-95.

no one saw it coming. it came from the oncoming-traffic's side over the median fast and just appeared on our hood. LUCKILY it went up & over with hardly a scratch on the windshield or roof. No airbags, no broken glass other than the headlight. the guy driving the flatbed said if i were going a little slower or if i had time to tap the brakes we would have most likely ended up with Buck on our lap.

The deer was a good sized young male that was probably dead before it hit the ground. i'll spare you those shots. The engine shut down on impact and dumped the coolant, but not much oil.

hair in the radiator and blood on the hood.

THANK YOU SUBARU everything crumpled where it was supposed to crumple (even if it's like a soda can), and my family is safe. woo, that was CRAZY. i'm going to go spend time with them, good night guys. be on top of your game out there, it's rough.

Glad to hear everyone is OK. Good that you had witnesses & still have hair/fur on the car so there will be no questions from your insurance - they can be funny about animal impacts.

I hit a deer last November - not much that can be done to avoid it.

wow, pretty lucky

to fix that- it'll be about 1-3k for parts and labor- I did similar damage sans a flying deer

glad everyone is ok though- that's the most important thing

speed safely

Sorry to hear about it, glad you're all OK. Seems like the time of year when deer get stupid(er).

Wow. That is scrary. Glad your not injured, and didn't do the typical "jerk the wheel at highway speed and take a bunch of other car with you" manuver.

Let us know how the estimate turns out. I also doubt it is totaled. With the impact it is unlikely the motor is damaged or anything, but it is strange that is shut down right away.

Definetly have a mechanic look at it. On front impacts the timing covers/grears, and belts can be damaged, and the motor will spin a bit with the valves banging into the pistons if the belt is off or jumped a tooth.

Inspect the front of the motor where the plastic covers are. If they are crakced, it's pretty likely the cam gears are damaged.

Man, that sucks. It hurts to look a the pics, but I'm glad everyone is fine. I saw a deer last night my self. If i Had been going a little faster there could have been trouble, as he would have been in the middle of the road when I came around the corrner.

From the pics, it looks like your air intake got hit. If the MAF got messed up it would cut the fuel off. Hopefuly it'll be something silly like that and not worse damage. Good luck.

i-95 southbound, around exit 19 (southport). i was in the middle lane when it sailed over the median from the left onto my hood. the deer bounced over us and landed off on the right shoulder. so he was flying at full throttle to make it all the way across the road like that.

the engine shut down instantaneously, too fast for the fuel cutoff. the whole engine bay is mangled/toast...the damage looks rather extensive. still don't know how we came outta that unscathed. a few centimeters difference (or milliseconds) and we would have been spitting deer fur out of what was left of our faces.

woo...what a car. i was able to get off the road without power very easily. i feel so lucky to have been driving a subaru. my black bullet handles like a champ, every time.

If the MAF were cut off, the engine would stop pretty much instantaniously. Fuel cut is fast. My FX-16 had a cracked intake hose and the small amout of air getting in behind the MAP (MAP on my car, MAF on most) made the car kick back and fourth so bad when I started up that I figured there had to be something wrong with the clutch/trany. I felt like I had forgotten how to drive or something, but I was pretty sure I hadn't.

Anyway, the best of luck to you. Hopfuly you didn't use it all up just by walking away with all your passangers, but if you did it was worth it.

HOLY COW! just heard from the body shop. they say it's TOTALLED!! the damage is too extensive to warrant an attempt at repairing it. now they're waiting for the insurance adjuster to confirm this.

according to the owner of the shop, that kind of damage to the engine and timing belt usually means the car will never be the same.

wow, i'm shocked. what do you guys think?

I'm not surprised, it looks like stuff got pushed back a good distance (for a subcompact).

Its likely got engine and drivetrain damage... once that happens its totalled almost 100% certainty. Both of those are really expensive.
