Well well well.. Looks like I checked in just in time. Sounds like that borla header will be a good match to go with the rest of my Stage 2 set up.. good to hear!

S3: Any chance you could put up even-bigger versions of the charts, or use colors with more contrast? I am having real problems reading the graphs..

Check the image resizing on your browser - especially if you are using IE in default mode. Click on the thumbnail to get a bigger (750x580) version to load. Then make sure the new browser window is at maximum, and hold the mouse over the image. If you see an orange expansion box in the lower right corner, your browser is making the graph smaller to fit the window. Just click on the orange box to get the full size.

And people wondered why I have always been a Borla Cheerleader!

Best bang/buck options that I could find:

Borla's header is $364 on NOPI. Comes ceramic coated which may be another benefit to some.
Gruppe-S' header is $399 on their site
GT Spec's header is $450 from Charged Performance

Thanks very much to all involved. Seems like any header is good if you go to Stage 4 or equiv? Or did the Stage 4 car with the standard manifold have a problem?

I have a nice huge monitor with lots of clarity and even I can't make out those graphs very well at all. If at all possible, higher res/larger graphs and plots would be nice.

I just need to know if i'm going to ebay my GTSpec GenII or not and which one to go buy instead =)

Granted the pics are hard to make out, but from what I got from the write ups and the pics:

A header is a header is a header.
This is especially true the higher you go in level of vehicle modification.
Since a header is a header is a header = cheaper is better.
Since no header was a stellar performer, it goes without saying that like other common Subaru mods, there really is no best one and they all perform about the same.
Since all header types/styles were tested, it goes without saying that if they tested 100% of the headers on the market today, the above would still be true.

****This is my opinion, draw your own conclusions****

Are headers one of the last mods one does ... I never thought of doing headers; Turbo back exhaust, APS Up-pipe, APS Aluminum Turbo/IC manifold. JDM STI IC, IC Sprayer, bigger fuel pump, EcuTek with a Shiv Dyno tune ... but never felt compelled to do the headers ...

yeah, i never really thought headers could give you 12-15whp and 20lb/ft like that. sounds like i might have to put that on my list....my long, long long list

Yea, headers help ALOT. Thats why I'm going full WRX aftermarket for my 98 RS turbo project, it forces me to buy new headers I'm gona grab one of those header/UP combos on ebay for 250 bucks

Watch out for the eBay set ups. My cheaper=better thought process still does not negate the general rule of research. Some of the eBay headers hang much lower than stock. This means saying bye-bye to some/all of the plastic undertray and increased risk associated with something hanging lower than the rest of the car. On a positive note, from what I have heard, the eBay headers (SSautochrome, XO2racing.com, and Stone Mountain Racing are the brands that come to mind) are copies of expensive header designs.

So how much do headers add to a stage 4? Are they saying that the increased torque up top isn't worth the increased lag? I have a Borla header, lots of torque, and lots of lag.

The stellar performer of the series according to what I can make out looks like the GPMoto where it shines in the higher rpms.. *or not

My header (GTSpec Gen2) looks disappointing everywhere.. sigh.

Edit: Actually looks like i matched them up wrong.. my GTSpec isnt all too bad.. especially on the larger turbo setup.

Does anyone else think the crossover or the curves is inconsistent and at the wrong rpm?

The torque axis doesn't start at zero so they won't cross at 5252.

Also, it would have been nice is the stock header was using an aftermarket uppipe.. you can't compare headers+uppipes against stockmanifold+catted uppipe.

I keep seeing new findings.. don't buy GTSpecGen2.. ever. Worthless header.. can't hold boost worth anything.

ya, they all cross at 4800 rpms... should be 5250 for the same scale.

On a different note, while none match the boost spool, several match the torque during spool - that's what matters.
