Outback Sport Emergency starting problem, help!

Before I start explaining the problem, the battery contacts have already been cleaned off. I have a 99 OBS withg 105k mi.

Ok, a few weeks ago my went to turn my car on and when I did the engine did not start, however all of my interior lights (radio, dome etc) worked and my headlights and brakes worked fine (no dimming). The starter itself did not move or turn even once, complete silence. As I turned the ignition fully, the headlights did not dim.

This has lasted a few weeks with the engine working perfectly normal and then doing what I described above (at the worst possible times). My subie repair man thought it was a bad connection from the battery so he cleaned off the contacts and it worked fine for a few days before acting up again last night.

My question is:

1) what the hell is wrong?!?!!
2) is it electrical with wiring issues?
3) do I need a new starter?
4) if this has happened to you, let me know what you did to fix it!

Thanks,

Brian

You may have a dead spot in the starter motor. Next time this happens, try hitting the starter with a hammer or bar and then try starting it again. If that does the trick you need a new starter.
Other possibilities- bad neutral safety switch (if it's an automatic)- check this by moving the shifter from P to N or just wiggle it and see if it starts, bad clutch safety switch (if manual), intermittent starter solenoid (need new starter if it's this).

I think I had the similar problem, and it went away, then a couple of months later, battery died mainly because the factory battery didn't have enough juice. During its death, when I start, I heard clicking sound emitting from the dash board, everything seems bright and radio is on, but the battery was a gonner. I don't know about your situation though, it might be the same. If you still have factory battery (the one that comes with the car), change it, and it will be fine.

Default STARTER

Mulder is the winner. It wouldnt not start two separate times, each one of those times i hit the starter and it did start, so I am having a new starter installed for 230.00 tomorrow. Thanks again.
