Default FS: 1991 Subaru XT6 5MT AWD

FOR SALE TO A SOUTHEAST BUYER:

1991 Subaru XT6 (Alcyone) 5 speed AWD

With.... Electronically Locking Center Differential!

Color: Fire Engine Red
Miles: 130k-ish on the body, the motor has about 80k on it. I'll post up the exact figures tonight.

The body is straight and rust-free except for the passenger side front fender which has some rust damage. Fenders are plentiful in junkyards and replacing that fender would involve minimal effort.

The vehicle has been converted from the factory air-ride suspension to coils on all four corners. It has factory XT6 2wd rear suspension, and Impreza RS front suspension. This gives about a 1 inch drop in the front and leaves the back at roughly stock height. The car has a "raked" look, it is a unique XT. It is also a former repeat autocross class champion in the Tristate region.

Our reason for selling is simply that it is a pain to drive in Atlanta traffic, the clutch is very on/off and Jess's commute is through city traffic. We'll be getting another Subaru that is less of a "project" vehicle for her to commute in.

The vehicle includes:
  • A spare engine (the original) which has about 110k original miles on it. It needs a few oil seals to be in great running shape. A mild build-up would make it a beast.
  • A full set of Factory Service Manuals. An invaluable resource.
  • A brand new bottle of the elusive "Cybrid" power steering fluid.
The engine is an ER27 SOHC 2.7L flat six, it's a high revving torque champ and one of the better motors Subaru built in the late '80s and early '90s. It is a non-interference design so timing belt failures carry no danger of engine damage. Here's a pic of the motor cutaway to whet your appetite: http://www.xt6.net/forum/files/2-7-motor-sm.jpg

This is a fantastic hobby vehicle and carries the potential for serious rally beater status. The locking center differential works flawlessly and is a hoot on a gravel road. The rear differential has some whine, but the AWD system is working properly and all systems are A-OK with the exception of the power steering which has an intermittent short (electric power steering).

ASKING $800 INCLUDING THE SPARE MOTOR. Make an offer.

The vehicle is here in Decatur, GA (Atlanta) and the spare motor is in storage in Greenville, SC.

Buyer responsible for pickup of both items though we will make every reasonable effort to assist in the logistics.

Thanks!

Dude! if I wasn't building a Spec Miata and also prepping the WRX I would be all over it...I think...

I have too many projects going right now...I would like to go and see the specimen.

Is this the one brought down from "Up Yonder"? If I had the extra money, I'd jump on this... much better than the '88 Auto 2WD XT6 that we had years ago.

That and the bushings... it needs some replacement rubber bits. It has a bit of a clunk from the rear differential carrier under sharp acceleration, from where the bushings should be. Other than that it runs good. And, like all XTs it leaks some oil. Typical older Subaru stuff.

Nope, stock rally-style locking differential Manual. It's full-time AWD too, not the Hi/Lo style like the earlier ones. Bill priced out the transmission for me, they're $6000 new from Japan.

Hahaha, I thought so.

On the power steering... ours would cut out at random times, sometimes in the middle of turning! My dad pulled the steering motor and opened it up and found LOTS of carbon dust from the motor brushes. Got some new brushes (I think ~$75 for the pair from the dealer) and put everything back together and no more steering cut-outs. 1 brush was worn completely away and if the motor stopped turning in a certain position, it would lose contact and stop working.
Better than paying almost $1500 for a new PS motor!!

From what Paisan told me it's a 6 puck copper racing clutch. I can tell it's getting worn because the engagement is less "violent" than it used to be...

I really like the car, I'll be sad to see it go. Looking to sell within 2 weeks if possible but we could go longer.

I believe its got about 150hp and the same torque-wise. With its weight, its got to be at least as quick as a stock RS, if not faster.
