Post So has anyone opted for an aftermarket hood yet?

After the talk about aluminum and CF hoods, has anyone gotten one?
Long story short, I need a new hood and am thinking about the aluminum one since it's apparently cheaper than the factory hood. (and yes I know it's not as strong) That's why I'm still thinking about it. SPD quotes the price as $465. That's better than I expected...and the same or cheaper than the factory hood as I recall.
What about CF hoods?...I did a search but no definite answer...
Anyone?...Anyone?...

I think the aluminum hoods that they have are factory parts. Wrx's and Sti's have aluminum hoods, stock. I have one that I ordered from Subaru. It had to be on special order, but I eventually got it. It weighs like 15lb(without the scoops and vents) It is very light compared to the stock steel one. I guess you have to compare the cost versus weight savings.

Yeah...
Well I should have said that it's factory RS vs. factory WRX...
The RS hood is sooo heavy compared to other hoods...nevermind the WRX hood. How is the strength. Have you noticed any difference or do you treat it any different?
Thanks for the info!

Thumbs up

The hood is great. Strength is just as good as stock since it has the webbing frame like the stock steel one. Its nice to lift a light hood ! And since it has to be painted, I don't have to worry about the stock crappy paint that usually chips off on the stock steel one.

As far as I know, real carbon fiber is twice the stregth of the same thickness steel and half the weight. I don't think it would explode, maybe break up in pieces as it absorbs the impact.

Why would a steel hood give good protection in a wreck? I have never seen a hood save anyones life..just gets all crumpled up...so I'd choose the lightest hood I could afford. Not messing with my bumpers though!

Teamsubaru: The hood is all crumpled up because it absorbed energy.
If it looks bad after a crash , it did its safetyjob.

I would have a hard time covering this up with paint. I guess the underside is finished like the top.Carbon fiber with kevlar yum yummmmmmm! Can you imagine that in a r.s. pattern with matching scoops? Naked?

Somebody who knows from composites (Kartboy) told me that the quality of those CF pieces is dubious. Apparently the resin will not stand up well to heat from the engine bay, as well as absorbed energy from sunlight. Eventually (too soon) It'll break down, and the thing will bascally disintegrate. The Aluminum sounds like the best idea for me.

-that's why I take an interest in the hood thing; little "misunderstanding" with a 2000 328ci... now I need to get things straightened out, so to speak.

The stock RS hood (sans scoop and vents, just the hood mind you) is $299.
