Ok, here is what I have determined about the PE 1418/20 series turbo when comparing to a VF30/34. They have a smaller inlet 45.5mm versus a VF30 47.9mm. They however have the same hot side as the VF30, a P18. Physically comparing them on the web (not accurate at all) the PE seem to have a smaller compressor housing as well.
The 14 has a max flow of 14m3/min, so using a conversion factor of 35.31 is ~500CFM. The VF30/34 has an estimated max flow of ~460 CFM. However, the VF maxes out at around 21psi where as PE rates the 1418 up to 28! So, I’m not sure if the max CFM is at 28psi, which would mean less CFM than the VF in most conditions. So my conclusion (which could be wrong!) is that a 1418 will likely produce similar HP, probably within 10 HP of a VF30/34. I can’t tell if it will be slightly higher or slightly lower, I just don’t have enough knowledge of turbos to determine this. Now the real pickle is spool up. I know the VFs have an A/R of .63, but I don’t know how to determine the A/R of the PE turbos. Also, is the A/R the main factor in spool time? The VF29 has a smaller inlet and compressor but the same hot side and A/R as a VF30 and spools much faster? This is confusing. Again, my guess is that a PE 1418 will start to build boost 300-500 rpm faster than a VF30 due to the smaller inlet and possible housing diffrence. So, I’m here at 5800ft and would love to have a turbo that spools faster than a VF30, yet can build push good CFM up top. I’m octane limited anyway so getting big power will be hard, as I don’t want to run race gas. If anyone can elaborate on this, or just tell me I’m plain off my rocker, please feel free! ~PC |

oopps.. sorry about that! I was thinking about buying the 1418, but remembered there was a 1420 so put it in for completeness. The 20 would indeed have a P20 hot side, and I would think would spool later, and also get closer to the theoretical max CFM just like the 1820. So I guess another good question would be...
How will the 1420 respond on a WRX? Big VF22 hot side, small flow limited compressor. Ugh, head hurts now... I live out east on Arapahoe, but work on 28th. There is meet in Boulder soon, check out the RM forum. ~PC |
