Question Impreza dead, need cheap car

Five weeks ago I totaled my beloved 96 Outback. It had a 2.2 engine, ABS and 4 disc brakes. I spent my insurance money on a nearly perfect 95 Impreza LX coupe, also with 2.2 and good brakes, for my daughter to drive. So now I'm stuck driving an old Camry, high miles and automatic. What I want is something thats fun to drive, preferably with AWD, stick and a wagon.
Considering how much I have to spend, some compromise is inevitable.
I am looking for input from those who have experience with any of the following cars, in case I can't find a cheap Impreza.

90-93 Legacy
90-93 DSM, esp Galant GSX
Old Audis
Sentra SE-R
Other late 80's/early 90's AWD cars (except Honda)

I expect to buy something with high mileage, and spend some money on repair.
I only want to drive this car until MY02 Imprezas are available. I can drive my wifes RS on weekends when I get the 'Urge'. Thanks.

Out of what you listed I'd go, in this order:
Galant VR4
Sentra SE-R
Legacy
Audi
Anything else
If you were only concerned with transportation I'd say definitely get a Legacy, but for fun the Galant or Sentra would be better

Get yourself a Mazda 323GTX, they can be found for under $5000 and with mods, they will smoke most cars out there.....

I drove a Sentra SE-R for some time. I was a great car. It handled nicely not as well as the impreza of course. I would still have it if the master cylinder did not burst and send my flying into four cars. I don't know what year you are thinking of, but I had a 92 and there are certain problems with them. 91 and 92 2.0L engines are the only bad ones of the bunch because there is an oil port in the head that usually gets clogged causing the cam to seize. If you look at one, look in the oil filler hole and make sure that the metal looks shiney and clean indicating it was taken care of properly. If its clean, you probably won't have any problems. Any ways, good luck.

My parents have an '87 Audi 5000CS. Its a nice car but it costs alot to maintain and its not all that reliable. The car I had before the RS was a '93 Legacy Sedan (http://www.angelfire.com/nv/subarulegacy). It was extremely reliable. It never needed any major repairs and it has 133k miles. It was a little pokey as far as acceleration and the brakes are mushy, but I still recommend it as a car.

Suzuki Swift GT? cheapest one I found is $1500. Good gas milage, cheap to maintain, easy to work on and great handling car.

Don't forget the 91-92 SE-Rs had the most powerful stock engines due to the cams. There was a recent article in SCC and the topic's been kicked around the SE-R list a few times.

Beware...I think you mean 90-93 DSM GSX, Galant VR-4. (Got a problem with the '94? DSM?)

There was a Galant GSX made at the same time as the VR-4...AWD, 2.0 liter, just no Turbo.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if you get a DSM, be ready to put money into it for mods...once you feel the turbo rush, and how cheap it is to make it more powerful on a budget, you'll want to just keep making it faster.

You buy a 90-94 DSM, drop $1K into it in mods and you'll be in the 13's in the 1/4 mile. That's all it takes... $1K

Just bought my son a 90 CRX, yes I know its a Honda and yes I know it's not exactly a wagon, but it is a hatch and if you can live with two seats, a very fun car. Cost me $2000 plus an additional $900 to get the timing belt and water pump changed, new muffler and smog check, and decent head unit.
