Default Buying a Porsche 914

Okie... I'm looking at buying a Porsche 914 for a CS Autocross car, then later to be converted to an EJ22 powered EM car.

I found one semi-locally for about $2000. It's a '74 2.0L Fuel Injected model, with about 95k miles on it.

Does anyone one here have some experience with these cars? I haven't seen this car in person yet, but for the price I'm thinking it'll have some issues. Hopefully most of the issues will be cosmetic which won't concern me since I'm buying to race.

My big concern is making sure it's mechanically sound, and won't break itself the first day out. I know I'm supposed to check for rust in the battery tray and on the front suspension, and take a look for oil leaks, but how much rust/oil is too much? Can anyone drop some more inspection tips on me? Any thing to watch for on a test drive?

Another thing I'd like to do eventually is swap the bolt pattern to 5x100mm so I can share rims between my WRX and the 914. Anyone ever done that, or something similar? I've got a friend that's looking at swapping his 'Ghia over to 5x100 for the same reason, perhaps I'll just wait and see how it works out there.

From: http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/How_to_buy_a_914.htm

Where to look for rust on 914's:

The front suspension A-arm mounting points (where the suspension bolts to the chassis).

The floor pan (make sure the seats aren't falling through!)

The rocker panels - especially check the jack post support area.

The rear suspension mounting points, especially the right-hand side.
The rear trunk pan.

The floor of the front trunk.

Inside the car, lift up the carpet and look for rust around the pedal assembly, the seat mounting points, and behind the seats at the firewall.

In the engine compartment: look around the battery tray. It is quite common for the battery tray and support to be rusted, and that is a fairly easy fix, but what you want to look for is rust in the engine shelf below the tray. If there are big rust areas and holes here, then look under the car near at the right rear suspension console and look for structural rust there.

Also in the engine compartment, look in the forward corners (use a flashlight). It is an area where water can sit.

Thanks for the link man! The funny thing is that I'm on that site, and I never bothered to check there for inspection tips! I guess I'm a NASIOC whore.

I'd like to, but due to cost and lack of a big garage, it prolly won't happen for at least a season or two of autocross. That's why I'd like to find a 914 w/ a good motor/tranny and some asthetics problems. That way I can afford it, and be able to race it next season in a stock or stree prep class. Then step up to modified w/ a EJ motor in a bit.

The big drawback is that the motor weighs so much it loses a lot of its handling. Much like the V8 Miata swaps. I'm hoping a EJ motor will be a bit lighter, but I'm not really sure that's the case... at least an EJ will sound right and have a lower CG due to the boxer layout.

I saw one with a nice V8 in it, flared fenders, fat tires, etc. at an auto-x in SF a few years back. I expected that thing to kick ass. Turns out I was faster than it in my stock '00 RS - by a wide margin. Either the driver sucked or the car handled like crap.

Probably the V8 thing would be good for straight line, but not for auto-x.

And, for the record, I have seen 914 to Subaru engine swap sites out there if you have not seen them already. Complete details, etc.
