Exclamation Thinking of Buying new rs, have some questions.

Im thinking of getting an rs, either brand new, or a couple years old. Right now i have a 91 mr2. What are some things i should look out for when buying a subaru? What are the common problems? How are the dealerhips? Any other info would be great! Whats the best model year for the impreza rs?
My only other car choice is a '95 m3, but ive heard maintence is expensive for those.

Thumbs up

First of all, welcome to the club! And as for which one to get, and what to look out for, there are a few things. MY98 and 99 had MAF sensors on the intake, making it difficult to do any mods to it, while the MY00 and 01 use a MAP sensor, making intake mods much easier. Also, the MY0x cars came with a rear limited slip differential, while the MY9x didn't. And I would suggest the manual tranny if you want to get the most from your car. Although there are some people on here who like their auto, I've also seen several who wished they had gotten the manual. Besides that, there aren't really any differences between the models. The interiors have some squeaks and rattles, but you get used to them. Oh, and if you want a new RS, you'll have to get the new body style with the round headlights. Same engine, but a little heavier. Guess that just depends on which body you like the most. Happy hunting!

seatown,

Do your plans include turbocharging the RS? Or are you planning to stay naturally aspirated?

Also, what is your budget? You should check out the Private Classifieds Forum, since there are about half a dozen members selling their RS' in various states of tune. I know of at least one 1999 RS that's already turbocharged that's for sale right now, and a couple of 98's, several 2000's and even a couple of 2001's.

One thing to listen for if you get a used RS is for bad wheel barings.
They are common problem with Scoobys!

It sounds something like off road truck tires on a highway... a loud humming sound.

Over all Scoobys are great cars, a bit slow in stock form, but by far the most fun to drive. Modding them makes the fun increase exponentially! They are very sporty AND practical (AWD is great in bad or good weather).

If you go with force induction... go with a turbo. MY98&99 are easiest to turbo. 99s have a more fragile MAF than 98s. MY00&01 have MAP sensors instead (and a LSD).

They are great cars with a great Rally heritage. Definately a good choice.
