Default engine idle

when it is cold outside, and you first start your car, is the engine idle loud, i think i hear a rattling sound, but once the car is a lil warm the sound fades, but can still be heard, what gives my car only has 8000 miles??

That's pretty normal for Subies. How does it sound in the 2000-4000 range once it's warmed up? If it sounds pretty smooth it's unlikely there is anything wrong with it.

thats totally normal. u have a beast engine, remember, its a horizontally oppossed 4 cylinder, boxer motor. it fires off differently than the usual 4 cylinder, it goes 13 24 which is why ur cars sounds mean and disturbing. ur car is bone stock im guessing, u need n exhaust to really hear ur car, appreciate the sound for its intimidating on a drag race. yea and do not punch ur car wen its still cold, itll fuk up ur engine. this isnt a luxury car its a japanese muscle car. just remember it looks nice n all but its really rally bred performance dont worri ur car is perfectly fine. i have the same car as u and i kno wat u are talking about =) if u dont like the sound u should have bought a lexus or a toyota camry hehe jk

I have the same problem when my car is cold as well. I brought it into the dealer twice before they told me that the noise was normal. This was the bulletin that they gave me.

I think it is a bunch of BS because a car with as little mileage as mine has should not have piston slap. But I guess due to the shortness of the piston skirts it is possible. I'm dealing with it cause I love my car. I want a WRX, but love the way the pre O2's look. If they had the rear end of the new age I would be totally content. Maybe I should learn how to weld??

dude i have 01 rs and the engine sounds like it wants to bite something when I do a cold start. It's just the nature of the engine. Enjoy it. Would you rather have a honda or toyota engine, that you can't even tell when their idling?

the cold brings out all sorts of creaks rattles and other wonderfull noises that make you panic for a split second! and then realize oh yeah! its winter! there is most likely nothing wrong with the car!
