Question backup MAFs for '99s at Thunderhill

I just read Shiv's latest article in SCC where again he had to deal w/ another dreaded MAF failure. I have a N/A '99 w/ a stock intake and filter, and I am going to the Thunderhill event. I'm concerned that w/ finally getting a chance to push my car a bit, I'm tempting fate. I don't want to get stranded 200 miles from home.

I know Santa Cruz Subaru is a sponsor and there's gonna be a guy from Subaru attending. Can we make sure that they can bring some spare MAFs? Actually, I doubt they would. That would be like admitting there is a problem w/ the MAFs. I hope they'd bring some anyway.

If my MAF does croak, I figure Subaru won't consider it a warranty item for some lame reason. Like that the failure happened on a race track or because it happened at speeds in excess of local speed limits or some other bogus reason. So I wouldn't be shocked if I had to pay for it. But that would still be better than limping 200 miles home.

Any other options. Are there any Subaru dealerships near Thunderhill?

Other than that, I'm totally stoked about this event and my RS. I'm gonna get a helmet this weekend and maybe a new exhaust. I'd love to get a K&N filter too, except for that damn MAF!

Another option would be to keep driving in "limp-around-the-track" mode.

Limp around the track. oooh...that sounds like fun.

Angus, thanks for the input. I've got 21k on the clock w/o any problems, so things would probably be fine. But, I'd like to play it safe.

Hello,

Guys, the MAF problem doesn't exist for stock intakes... It's only the aftermarket intakes that have issues.

Hello,

Craig, that's pretty funny... I have a friend who's replacing his car because after three tries, the alignment shop couldn't get the car perfect. I said "go to a different shop," to which he replied "No, I hate the car now, I'll just get a different one."

Just because the MAF fails you want another car? Sheesh... People with too much money on their hands...

You could just get a TEC for 1/10th the price of a new car Or order up a new, sturdier MAF from Trey once he gets that settled...

Talking

Such a short response, Joel? Are you feeling ok?

Nah, I like the car a lot. and I don't have enough money to throw around. My last post was a bit extreme and premature. Heck,my MAF worked fine at lunch today. No sense fretting over my MAF until it breaks. I would just like a better alternative than another weak MAF. Its just unnerving that it could go, whenever.

I'm really looking fwd to see what Cobb Tuning comes up w/. Or maybe Subaru will make a way to adapt one of the more sturdy intake setups to the '99. So many other Impreza parts are backward compatible. I wish the MAF/MAP thing was.

Otherwise, I AM happy w/ the car.

Cool

I have 18 track events plus rally-x and pretty outlandish off roading on my MY99 and no MAF problems...stock set-up.

I'll see if they will bring something
