Wink Cyl 4 misfire, no drivability concerns...

Kinda just putting this here for reference untill I figure it out..

98 RS
109,XXX

I get a cylinder 4 misfire, only on WOT pulls in 3rd gear to redline.

No drivablity concerns, stumble, buck hesitation.

I havent really looked into to much, other than changing the original wires and bosch plugs that were in the car when I got it, to subaru OEM wires/plugs.

I got the misfire before and after doing the plugs/wires.

Ill have to check the compression when I get a chance, and probably replace the coil for good measure...after all it does have over 109k on.

It seems like It started after I put the intake on...but I dont know, and im too lazy to put the stock stuff on to make a comparison

performance mods
jcsports intake w/pipecross filter
borla headers
stroumung midpipe
scoobysport back box

my rs has the SAME issue, but only @ WOT in 4th gear - not 3rd.

I replaced my plugs and wires and its still there (the flashing cel).

Im going to get stock plugwires and throw them on there (possibility)...but I heard a lightweight flywheel causes this too?

My coil pack had corrosion on #3 (closest to firewall on pass side), So I got aftermarket wires...Vitek wires.

Mods:

lw flywheel/clutch (exedy)
UDP
ganzflow intake
decat cat pipe/2.25" apexi n1 'catback'.
replaced plugs and wires @ 60k miles & now I am just over 66,500 miles.

I get misfires on all 4 cylinders, which I believe is attributable to my Fidanza flywheel. For whatever reason, cylinders 3 & 4 always trip first, so depending on how soon I hook up my PocketLogger sometimes I get just 3 & 4 and sometimes I get all 4.

I have horrible hesitation/bucking issues at low RPMs, sumthin' just isn't right. I'm not sure what to think, though, because once it hits about 4000rpm the timing all comes back and the car comes to life. Very strange.

This is pretty common to have a terminal corroding... you might want to check/clean that as it's a pretty good canidate to causing a misfire.

When I saw the corrosion on the pack, I used sandpaper to take the white/green corrosion off, and got rid of the 'fouled' wire(s).

I am thinking that I cought the corrosion too late and it caused a failure inside the pack (intermittent problem).

Also, when I am idling, Ill rev the motor to 3000 or 4000 rpms, and once it drops back to idle, the car wants to stall ...I believe the exedy flywheel is 12-13lbs, making it heavier than the fidanza flywheel IIRC.

BTW Pat, Where did you get your pocket logger?

My car sometimes starts on 3 cyl.
I haven't taken it to my mechanic. He points to the follwing:

1)Vaccum leak
2)Faulty coil/wires/plugs

On startups from standing still, let's say at a stop light, I hear a pop sound on the engine. A misfire no doubt. I don't get CELs though

Mods: CAI, Lightned pulley set, highflow exhaust and ECU tune + S-AFC.

www.pocketlogger.com . I haven't visited the site in a while, don't know if it's still up. Pretty handy little tool, the only downside is that Subaru's apparently send pretty low data rate to the OBD2 port. I only get 6 samples/sec, so if I datalog the maximum 6 parameters I'm only sampling each parameter once per second. Not that great if one is trying to catch the cause of a momentary hesitation. Most of the Pocket Logger users seem to be DSM types, and I seem to recall reading that they see 18-20 samples/sec.

my 98 RS with 92000 miles on it is still misfiring on cyl. 4 as well, with no drivability issues. it pulls strong. replaced the coil pack , wires and plugs, and it still misfires. i saw blue sparks on the coil pack and wires as well, and they are both brand new. going to the dealer tomorrow to see what they have to say. but, as there are no drivability isssues, (doesn't hesitate etc.) is it bad to keep driving with the blinking CE light?

hmm, my '97 outback just threw me a CEL too - P0303 and P0304, 3rd and 4th cylinder misfire. The CEL was flashing intermittently last night for about 5-10min, but it's stayed on since then w/o flashing.

It hasn't affected drivability at all either... car feels normal... Any ideas? I cleared the CEL light at Autozone, but will the dealer still be able to read the problem via the OBDII port? I'm going to ask them to look at the coilpack, check for corrosion, any other ideas?

oh, and mods:
K&N filter
snorkusectomy
grounding kit

all of which have been on for thousands of miles with no problems...

All I can say with mine was it stopped when I didnt have the borla headers on.

as soon as put them back on, back came the misfire.

My Legacy's been hitting an 0301, and I can get it to trip most of the time by going WOT in 4th, around 75 mph. The coil terminal is nice and clean. 53k mi.

I've got a COBB CAI and NGK Iridium plugs. The CEL was happening before the plugs, and was my inspiration to change them out in the first place.

I see mention of the flywheel... mine is stock, but my clutch is starting to slip some, and will undoubtedly need replacing soon. Any possible connection?
