SEMA 2003: A lighter Lancer Evolution

Automotive News / November 10, 2003

LAS VEGAS -- To appeal to driving enthusiasts and sport-compact tuners, Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. has made an RS variant of the high-performance Lancer Evolution. Mitsubishi created the RS by stripping 150 pounds of comfort items from the Evolution and adding a limited-slip differential to the front axle.

To reduce the Evolution's weight, Mitsubishi removed the rear spoiler, rear wiper, high-intensity-discharge headlights, air conditioning, audio system, power windows, power door locks, power side mirrors, vanity mirrors, map lamps, trunk trim, parking brake leather cover and rear assist grips.

Along with the front limited-slip differential, Mitsubishi added a cross bar to the truck to increase body stiffness. There are two color choices for the Evolution RS: red or white.

The Evolution RS will go on sale in January with a suggested retail price of about $27,000, said Dan Sims, design director of Mitsubishi Motors North America. He said the U.S. market will get about 700 units of the RS in 2004.

Eh, that's a bit extreme for me. If I had the money for a $27k stripped, streetable race car, I'd be driving a FactoryFive.

There were rumours about a stripped down version quite a while before the Evo RS. I guess we can only wait and see.

the higher powered Evo is the Evo MR, and is JDM only.

I think its a great idea to bring both the RA and the RS to North America. Only a small % of people buying these cars are "hardcore" racers, hence the limited production numbers. In Japan, there is a HUGE number of factory options so you can tailor the car to how you will be using it. If NA got a taste of that, I think Subaru, Mitsubishi and all other manufacturers would be better for it.

Yeah, it isn't exactly like building a computer (though some may tought it that way), though I sure hope that is the direction they are moving. Especially with things like optional wheels and such for Subaru, why make consumers pay twice and take both sets of wheels when they only want one set! That's just an example, but you know what I mean.

I'd never pay 27k for this boy without AC, power anything, stereo, etc.. Might as well go to jail...

I am particularly fond of bad boys like that - and in the case of the RS the lack of a big rear spoiler might even help you stay out of jail.

It all depends on what you plan on using it for. One person I know bought his STi almost strictly for race. He doesn't have too much of a problem traveling 2hrs to tracks but any more it gets trailered. If I had a few more bucks and planned on using one of these cars parcirularly for race, I wouldn't have a problem either. There are enough people that can use these vehicles strictly for race. They are rather formidable against the much beefier Z06, especially on tighter courses.

It's all about where you set the priorities of the vehicle. If it's speed, then that's exactly what you are looking for in a vehicle. Weight is the enemy. If it's more luxury, or GT cruising, then that's the type of vehicle with the power everything, AC, etc. Nothing wrong with the GT cars around anyways.

The good news is there are a few cars that match each, and a lot of cars that try to find a happy compromise.
