Subaru Stars Won't rev over 4100RPM - HELP!

Okay, 1995 Impreza L AWD Coupe with a 2.2L engine in it and a 5 speed manual tranny. When I got this car in April, it would rev up to the limit (6K rpm? i think) and now it won't. It only revs up to 4100RPM. I've tried to replace the O2 sensor, the MAF sensor and neither have worked. Could it be the TPS (ummm...hey Peter, I'm gonna need you to check out that Throttle Positioning Sensor)???

I'm stumped and would appreciate any help provided.

only modification is a cat-back stock WRX exhaust.

thanks

if you have CEL, get the code pulled, it will pinpoint the problem.
vehicle speed sensor failure is most likely to indroduce Fail-safe mode (engike cutting at 4K)

theyre's no way the engine would cut steadily around 4K rpm other than the "whatever called" ecu safety mode

Agreed, If your car has a Check Engine Light and you can get the code and description it will help. It definitely does sound like a limp mode. I have see it happen when the car looses the speed sensor signal for example.

gotcha...the code is 23 - which when referring to the Chilton's manual, it's the MAF sensor. But I JUST replaced that...
Is there a way to reset the ECU?

Maybe nothing - but some cars may have some 'capacitance' in the system that stores the 12V and only discharges slowly. Cuts having to wait like an hour or something. YMMV

I know you mentioned the exhaust as the only mod - but do you also by chance have an Amsoil or K&N type filter?

They have a rep for killing MAFs. The oil gets on it and corrodes, interferes with it. Try cleaning the MAF with some brake cleaner , reset the ECU, or you may need ANOTHER one.

brake cleaner, huh? I'll give that a shot. I'm still unsure as to how to reset my ECU...I tried what was suggested (disconnect neg battery, pump brake, etc...) but should I just wait a while longer than 15 mins?

I'm no expert here but if you lost you radio presets or your trip odometer it probably reset the ECU. Doesn't hurt it let is sit overnite if its convenient. Also, may take a few tankfuls of gas to 're-learn' the car and your driving style. Good idea to do after any mod or repair I guess.
