Unhappy teh Exhaust Leak in midpipe -- Recommendations?

I was taking my car out for a quick spin around the block today (about 40 degrees F outside or so) and I noticed that there was condensation dripping from my midpipe. Also, I could hear a high pissed "sssssssssssssssssssss" sound coming from that area-- it was audible in the trunk as well.

Something needs to be said about this midpipe. It was originally a Stromung SS 2.25 pipe, but it was modified by our family mechanic to put a resonator in it. It appears that the resonator is mild steel because it has rusted considerably in the 9 months it's been on the car while the rest of the exhaust is picture perfect. It seems that he attached the resonator via exhaust clamps, which I suspect is causing this leak, but I degress...

Would it be cheaper to replace the pipe outright with a new midpipe that has a resonator built in? Does Stromung or another exhaust manufacturer make such a thing? Or, would it be cheaper to have this pipe repaired.

uh, Is that where it's leaking from? If so then yes, you would want to replace that. ss and mild steel don't mix too well. Especially when you try to weld them together with the wrong type of welder.

Good luck

Yeah, the mechanic really dropped the ball on this one. He's a BMW master mechanic, so you'd think that he knows his stuff...I figured that exhaust know-how wasn't specific to Subarus in general, but it looks like he didn't know what he was doing

I'm really looking for specific suggestions to replace the midpipe with. Does Stromung make a resonated midpipe? If so, where can I find it? Thanks!

Do they make stainless resonators? Just replace the resonator and use welds...

I would just replace the midpipe with another stromung... too loud for you? Just insulate the trunk floor directly over the exhaust can.,... I have a trunk mat from a Honda Prelude folded in half in that location and it makes more differences than I ever thought it would (not to mention I have the mat to use as a knee pad when changing tires at the track now)....
