Question EJ22 Assistance

Hey Everyone,

I've been looking at a lot of the posts here, and other sites, and vendors. What I'm finding is a lot of support for the NA EJ25, but no listings for my poor 2.2. My question:

How many of the NA 2.5 parts are compatible with my 2.2?

I am interested in / considering cams and exhaust. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't own a 2.2 but may be buying one next year and have done a lot of the same reading /searching you have I bet.

some of what I've found that you refer to;
headers;
Borla - unequal length
MRT - equal length

cams;
Paeco - custom?
Cobb - ?
MRT - ?

also check;
www.usmb.net
www.obsportal.com
www.i-club.com
Yahoo groups imprezaoutback(?-something)

maybe other will respond

Our GanzFlow cone filter Intakes, ProECM pulleys, ProECM and IWTU chips, Brullen Headers and catbacks, Pro1 and Cusco strut bars, Fuji and Cusco sway bars, Pro1 and Cobb shifters, Cobb suspension, etc... are all compatable with your 1998 2.2

Does Brullen have headers for the single exhaust port 2.2l engine?

Thanks ImprezaRS.

I have a CAL spec car which uses a different timing belt.
If I go with headers, should I re-time to the U49 spec?
Is there a decent street cam out there?
Will the 2.5 SOHC cam fit in my head? Any benefit?

I hear the 2.2 will wake up pretty well just by letting it breathe, how much can I do before a ECM/ chip is required.

Again, thanks in advance.

No need to change the belt timing, you have to use a DOHC cam set which I believe is an extra $400 from Cobb vs the SOHC.

You can do everything but an intake before you need an ECM/chip - the j-tube intakes like injen and Rallispec will need a chip, but the GanzFlow con filter intakes will work without one since they keep the resonator box. However, the chip does more than just air fuel mixture, it also advances timing and removes the 1998 model's 112mph speed limiter.

It might be very cheap to have a custom made full exhaust for a single port 2.2 btw... Headers would be very easy to fabricate fore it.

I read something interesting in a post over at www.usmb.net (a thread about bubbles in the overflow tank). This guy said he got a few xtra ft/lbs down low in the rev range by switching to a cooler thermostat. Anyone have a reference or experience with that?

And I wondered about just hacking off the flanges on the stock exhaust mani. to use for fabricating headers - that's a good suggestion. Or maybe flanges are available?

I also read of someone using ej20 heads on an EJ22. I guess you get higher compression? Maybe need some toluene or race gas?

Larry,
Is your suggestion to "...to use a DOHC cam set..." assuming the use of a DOHC head? What about the 2.5 SOHC cams? Thanks for the tips. Not looking for huge speed, just increased throttle response and improved SOP grunt. Love torque.

Carl,
I've been reading more about the Borla headers, price looks OK for stainless, and the word out there is that their quality has increased recently to resolve complaints of cracking.

Took some advice and cleaned the MAF and added some additional grounds last night. I swear the mid is stronger and my radio reception is better.

Well, what heads do you have?

If you have SOHC heads you need SOHC cams.

If you have DOHC heads you need DOHC cams.

You can't put DOHC cams in an SOHC head, and visa versa.
