Have a Nice Day? OT and very Long : I'm a lawbreaker now like Opie

I had a fun run-in with the law yesterday -
the first in my Impreza.

My lunch break is an hour, and if I decide to go spend it with my boyfriend, who works 10-15 minutes down the road, traveling takes up about 1/2 the break..so when I stopped at a favorite restaurant to pick up the lunch I had called to order earlier, I was trying to get in and out as quickly as possible.

I noticed that there were no spaces near the building, and even though it is not normally something I do, I parked in a small space between two handicapped spots. I ran in, grabbed my lunch and paid for it, and ran out. YES!!Seven minutes total! (I hadn't even bothered to shut the windows or sunroof.) As I was coming out, I did my customary thing and hit my unlock button on my remote. "Blip!" my alarm chirped, just as I looked up and noticed 5 sheriff's officers walking by in jeans and Orange County Sheriff polo shirts.

I played it cool, because by now they had already noticed the car, so I figured if I walked to another car and pretended this one wasn't mine, they'd probably leave me a ticket any way. Better to be there when I got it than take the chance.

Sure enough, the training officer (as his shirt said) walked up to me as I was climbing in and said with a scowl on his face, "Do you know how much this ticket would cost you? I ought to write you one, and I'm real tempted to." He went on with a 15 minute lecture about how he didn't believe there were no spots here to park in and I shouldn't be in the spot unless I could prove I was handicapped. I am very shy, I've only had 1 speeding ticket, and I've never been the kind to park illegally much less argue with a cop. So I kept my mouth shut - I figured if I pointed out that I wasn't IN a spot, I was BETWEEN them, he could still ticket me for being parked incorrectly, and our County cops are notorious for being a$$hole$. I just nodded and tried to look resepctful and serious.

I am sure the whole time, especially when I softly noted that there hadn't been any spots when I pulled up, that he was looking at my race-y gear like my shoulder pads and my hood scoop and thinking, "Damn kids and their rice-burners and their attitudes thinking they're so fast and cool."

Well, he may have just been a Colin McRae fan irritated that the crash kept Burnsy very close in championship contention, but he did say, as he shut my door for me, "Have a nice day . . pretty car."

PHEW!!!!!

Yeah but they're less noticeable ones than the face
That was real lucky, leaving w/o the ticket, I'd have gotten that ticket without even turning off the car

Heh... the one parking ticket I ever got was for parking in a handicapped space. There were no spots at school, and I had this HUGE art project to bring inside. I figured parking in that space would be better than parking in the fire lane... so I did. I come out 10 minutes later to move my car and found a $160 ticket on my windshield. The ticket got thrown out of court, because the courts were too busy to worry about a measly $160. Hey! Works for me! And I later found out that parking in the fire lane would have cost me $5. Go figure!

Hmmm.... so now we know what you do on your lunch breaks. Harass the local constabulary and invent new places to park. Technically, as you stated, you weren't in a handicap spot soooo... you're ticket would have been some type of incorrectly parked.

I wonder if the cops ego swelled with the opportunity to harangue a young lady in front of his trainees.

Sooo.. what did you order for lunch anyway?

Cool

Has anyone seen the "pregnant" parking spaces? I was wondering - how pregnant do you have to be?

The pregnant spaces are a really cool idea, and I'm glad that some stores have 'em. But, they aren't enforced by law...so people can park in 'em indiscriminately. But, please, don't use 'em if you aren't or don't have an infant.

When my wife was insanely pregnant, the pregnant space was always taken, and she'd have to waddle into the store from far out in the lot. More than once as she was going in (or coming out) the non-pregnant culprit would appear with the cigarrettes he'd just purchased... "I was just running in"... My ass.

See, that's why I felt bad for parking there - but the way I was parked, either of the spaces could still have been used...
And by the way Tim, I had a baked sweet potato and a big salad. (I'm one of those annoying people who gets grossed out by food like I had to eat @ Moroso - Nachos, sausages, hot dogs, etc.)
