Default OT: Canadian travelers to the USA beware!

If you have a maple leaf on your backpack or luggage the next time you travel south of the border you might be stoned or something.

Yah, only AMERICANS are allowed to be proud of their country.

Has anyone noticed all the flags people have on their houses when going to the states?

maybe the yanks should stop pissing everyone off by trying to run the world...then people wouldn't try to differentiate themselves from them

I like ChrisF, and a few other Americans but there are some who suck dong. I had a couple Americans get mad at me when I was in Japan because I sported a Canadian flag on my baggage. It wasn't even a badge it was just one of those identification tags but had a Canadian flag on it. Just so happened these chachis were military and were IN UNIFORM!!! I was in absolute disbelief when they told me that I shouldn't try to differentiate myself from them because we are basically the same....we're just north of the US. I asked "what about Alaska?". Oh....yeah. Anyways, unfortunately we hear the extreme views more regularly than the normal views. I actually met a lot of Americans in Japan who were sporting Canadian flags because they didn't want people to know they were Canadian. There are heaps of American who are ashamed of this kind of opinion that is held by the uneducated and closed minded.

Anyways.....c'est la vie.

Maybe that's why the Americans are P.O.ed...
They think that we're actually fellow americans with Canadian flags on our shiz, ashamed of being americans.

I saw a bush/chaney completely decalled SUV driving downtown flying american flags in the summer...guy was even wearing a cowboy hat, and had "don't mess with texas" stickers on his rear bumper... and I gotta admit, I felt overwhelming anger. I think americans are overly proud of their country, its funny how this war on terror they are fighting for "freedom" is taking away their own liberties and freedoms. Goodbye Just-war, hello Guantanamo, hello Racial Profiling/Racism. Regime change like its out of style.
Where are those weapons of mass destruction? Did they get Bin Laden or Omar? Afghanistan is being run by war lords outside of Kabul and to the North. Where is Saddam?
Moreover, how many innocent people have they killed or harmed, either by displacement, starvation, or in the line of fire? The answer is millions.
Violence spawns violence, how does that defeat terrorism?
I wonder why we are differentiating ourselves at every opportunity.

I went down to San Fran for a basketball tournament in grade 11, and I swear half the people down there were driving pickup trucks with gun racks, and they wore nothing but desert storm camo.

At the peak of their ignorance one of them asked me to "Speak Canadian"

Yeah some American people are truely weird. So what if we wear a Canadian badge? We're proud of a country that don't piss of people. Plus we got booze, hockey, and girls (we got a Canadian in Miss World contest and she's 2nd place).

Just because americans don't want to sport the badge doesn't mean we don't. I mean, I think most canadians are quite proud to be Canadians. At every hockey game now, it makes my heart swell hearing the entire crowd pelt out the canadian anthem.

And also on the topic, I have a large canadian patch on my backpack, and I wanted to buy a team canada hockey jersey especially so that I could wear it outside the country.

I'm proud to be canadian and I like to show it. I guess people in the states don't like it too much, though I've never really had a problem with anyone. Most people just ask me if I live in a house....

Thought I'd chime in here (being as I am one of the accused).

It's hard to disagree with much of what has been said. I love my country, but hate the genocidal maniacs who currently run it. That is part of the beauty though - the freedom of dissent, no matter how unpopular it may be. This whole new wave of what I call blind patriotism is pariah on our (American) society. 911 was a horrible event but instead of introspection as to why those involved hate us so much, we turn around and say "kill em all!". Enlightened thinking if ever I heard some. (sarcasm).

The mentality that would get upset at some foreign tourists displaying their home courntry's flag at the pinnicle of difficult climb is the same one that says "well, if you don't like it here, why don't you get the 'f out?". Sorry, i'll stay and continue to ruffle feathers.

PS: Canada is a great country. I love living here even if temporarily. You do have something to be proud of. One of my co-workers (local) told me of a statistic he loves: There were fewer murders in all of last year in BC then there was in the first 2 months in LA county alone.

PPS: Thanks for the support Tora...and when are you going to get those Whiteline sway links !!

Aww, Tora doesn't love me. I guess I'm just too damn American for him.

As for me, the weirdest thing about my decision to leave the States was permanently losing the feeling of having a home to return to. I don't suppose many of you understand. All abbout timing, I guess. I came to Canada in August '01, and home just hasn't been the same since.

Still, though ... focus groups? Hahaha. Why wasn't I asked to sign up? I would have given them all the sound bites they could take!

"Yeah, them Canadians. They make really good stuff, but that's because they just copy American designs and profit from it. They are a race without creativity. That, and they have those funny slanted eyes."

"Isn't the Canadian president or whatever the guy who drinks a lot of Vodka and has a lolita complex?"

"The Oilers are the best American hockey team ever -- they'll beat anything Canada can put up!"

"What I don't understand about Canada is that they say they're a separate country, but they just copied their language from us."

"I'm just glad the Cold War is over now, and we freed the people of Canada and gave them the gift of Democracy, so now we can now have normal relations with them."

"I really think we should have been faster in removing those darn Canadian terrorist camps."

"Canadian girls are hot, but I just don't know about Canadian guys. They always struck me as kind of queer in the lumberjack sense."

Not going to flame the fuel further, but for those of you spouting of violence begets more violence, and other philosophical views of the same kind...

Doesn't it make you a hypocrite then to be criticizing and disliking (even hating) Americans? You're stooping to their level of "well they got beef with us so now we got beef with them".

And those who said/think that Americans are all crazy uncivilized rednecks who drive pickups with gunracks...Take a look in our own backyard.

There are clowns, muffins, ignorant hicks and generally all around village idiot types of people in ALL areas of ALL countries.

Vancouver, BC, Canada included.
