Post MY00 Turbo & First Impressions

First off, I must thank Theo (Turbo) who is a class guy and is doing a great job. I met Nero over the weekend and he is another class guy. Must be the weather here

I am running @ 5psi for now til all the work is done (mostly gauge work). I had plenty of time to drive it on the long trip back and the system is really nice. I am using the Borla Headers and a custom free flowing cat and a stromung dual tip. Theo told me (I never heard one in real life) the system sounds like a Ducati now. All I have to say it is loud! This thing screams and would drown out any rustang.

Theo did some testing so this is his report and not mine - kind of laggy right now, boost come on hard around 3.5k. running at 5psi right now and it feels like a whole new car. He turned it up to 10psi and did a 4 wheel burnout off the line. Told me 5psi is fast, but 10 is a whole new world. He raced a guy in a crx with a teg motor that does 13 high 1/4s. He said off the line he walked away from it.

Much more tuning has to be done. I will take pics when the whole picture is finished. The Auto tranny sure does some strange stuff.

Thumbs up

Oh yeah my webpage is: www.geocities.com/nick_sti/

The system is there. There were minor changes and I will be updating it soon.

Criticism always welcomed.

Question

NickSTi,

Could you please tell me how much the complete system was? I am considering one and the Minnam kit is just too expensive and I don't think it is worth it!

Thanks,
John

Well the original price is mid 3s, but I had some additional stuff done to my car (I have an auto as well and I got an auto tranny cooler). I think it is a better deal, but ask around I guess. Hope that helped some. Last I heard Rallispec was going to retail them, so maybe it will be different.

Maybe after Rallipsec starts selling them and they make a few at a time ti will bring the cost down a little. The Minnam was mid to high $3K range. Hopefully they can get it down to a flat $3K.

I believe you. Although when we were discussing the Advan RG's a few months back, you were whining about spending too much on the car back then.

The $4200 Minnam kit is the stage two kit- it's not really THAT bad, is it?

Yep he's right. I was only talking about the Stage one. The stage2 is pretty damn expensive. Especially when you consider installation, tuning, and modifying parts. That is one of the key reasons for some of us waiting to see what other companies came out with. The ASR kit was cheaper but not many people had them. The Rallispec kit was rumored to be coming out. Now obviously we know it is definately coming out.

Actually Nick,
I sold my turbo prelude and got a Audi S4...

You can't match the speed of my S4. No way, no how.. Cause you're as fat as a cow.. bahaha (educational conversation here) ((disclaimer: I have never seen NickSTi or probably ever will, so calling him fat I am basically joking around))

Im sure NickSTi is a pretty well-rounded guy

Question

NickSTI
how are you running 5psi with the Borla headers and a turbo? i guess i'm a little confused right now? Running a turbo means running a turbo manifold right?

Let me get this straight, the car is not having any problems holding boost right now? I heard someone else with a turbo 2000 kit couldn't hold more than 3psi without the MAP misreading it?

What kind of engine managment are you running?

RotrPwr,

The Borla header is ends at the cat. So all you need to do is fabricate an exhaust gas collector from the header on, much like how the Minnam collector mates to the stock exhaust manifold.

Well I figured I would save the details as such for the tech forum, I was actually surprised when i heard I was one of the few 2000s with a turbo (well one of two i think).
As soon as I get a chance dyno numbers go up, with pics.

JC Sports has a couple of 2000 turbos out there at 5 and 8 psi, from what I hear from the locals (I'm in Colorado, and know several people who visit JC Sports weekly)

And, the turbos work with stock headers, so they'll work with Borla headers too. The thing that changes is the downpipe from turbo to cats, so I'm told.

FYI, 5 and 8psi of boost in Colorado is closer to 2 and 5psi at sea level. That's one reason the tuners up there get by with less sophisticated fuel and ignition management.
