^^^ Cool, and neat name. My wife is an astrophysicist working mainly on extrasolar planets.

What's going on with the space station? It seems to be over budget and behind schedule, yet now we hear these wild plans for a moon base and trip to Mars.

Not to hijack the thread...but things are slow as a result of Columbia. We actually have time to catch up since we were behind schedule. As far as over budget goes...It's hard to put a price tag on something that's never been built before, plus if we asked for enough money Congress would never give it to us.

Fair enough, but the ISS does seem to have achieved less than expected at a higher cost than expected. It just makes me wonder what the moon base or Mars trip would end up costing in the end. (I tend to think it would be better to leave space exploration to robots and not bother sending people.)

I think more money is wasted developing and stockpiling weapons we will never use. The TOTAL NASA budget is less than one percent of the federal budget. Although ISS has not yet achieved many of its goals, it is a result of not having sufficient funding. That leaves the maximum station occupancy at 3 not the 7 people it was designed to operate under. Currently very little time is available for scientific research since most of the crew time is spent maintaining the station.

As far as sending people to our moon or Mars, I fully support that effort. Although I know people could perform better at those locations than robots could, I cannot say the scientific benefits outweigh the risks.

If you are willing to move to Los Angeles and work in the defense industry, Raytheon and several others are hiring. What are your interests and/or competencies? PM me if you are interested.
