Let's see... the job that pays the bills, keeps me insured, and may one day allow me to retire.... I work for a major employer of civil servants, as a civil engineer, frustrating drivers every day by making red, yellow, and green LED's turn on and off in a set sequence... yeah, I'm a traffic signal guy.

Weekend job... aka the 'fun' job... I drive trucks, tow trailers, deep fry foods in oil, put sugar water in various containers, push 'stop' and 'start' buttons, assemble and disassemble complex machines, sell little pieces of paper, listen to complaints, and count George Washingtons through Benjamin Franklins... and I betcha you didn't guess this one... I'm a carny...

Someone controls them? Based on what? Cameras? Sensors? Algorithms? I'm legitimately curious on this one.

Depending on the intersection and the technology deployed, detection of vehicles can be done via inductance loops, magnetometer, video presence (camera), or no detection at all. The controller at the signal then takes that input, and follows the program that someone like myself develops based on traffic counts, computer simulation, and historical timings to operate the signal. The program includes minimum and maximum green times, yellow times, all-red times, as well as other information, depending on if the signal operates by itself, or if it is coordinated with other adjacent signals.

Reprogramming of those times can be done in some cases remotely, and in other cases at the signal itself. I can observe traffic and adjust times 'on the fly' in real time at the intersection. Some systems in other parts of the country are using operators watching cameras to make adjustments, while others use a predictive algorithm that uses live traffic counts from the detectors to adjust times based on actual traffic.

The days of the old fashioned 'fixed time' signal with no detection are rapidly going away. With today's computerized controller, we can set up multiple different programs for different times of day, day of week, or even a specific day of the year (think Black Friday) to optimize the signal operation for varying traffic volumes and directional flow.

Hope this answered your question without getting too technical...

I like technical. Very cool stuff there. Who'da thunk so much goes into it. I assumed it was all motion sensors & if it doesn't change I roll back & creep up. Usually works in my neighborhood. Maybe those ones are on sensors.

I blend oil for a little Japanese company called Idemitsu Lubricants America. I blend oils. The best part is I blend oil for Subaru. I also get all of the free oil I can use! Yay! If you buy any Subie oil at the dealer I probably dripped sweat in it.

I'm 23 at about 55k/year, too out is 80k/year but I wanna break six figures in my thirties. Only downside is NYC is too expensive, even with my salary I'd be living check to check if I left my parents house but I might head south if a position opens up

I drive for ups also, I had too many second jobs while I was part time. So I refuse to have one now that I'm full time. The only work I do on weekends is on my car. How old are you anyways? I'm only 25 and I'm too tired to have another job. They must not be working you hard enough

How long did it take before you were a driver?

I'm 23. I'm not full time and never will be, still a tcd which is fine because I work 5 days a week if I want. If I don't want to then it's ok. I go out on average with a little over 300 packages and 130-145 stops a day. Pretty easy. Tuesdays and Thursday's on my run are 400+ packages and 170+ stops easy. I really enjoy working for discount though, that's why I do it. A fellow ups driver, close to 50 years old, is a bartender at a small local bar friday and saturday nights, every weekend haha some people just have that side thing they really enjoy. I love working on my car, but since i have a family now, priorities have slowed that down and the limited free time i have is primarily spent with them.

Yeah. You mean rtd? Might as well be full time just for half the year. I do the same thing but we got a lot of slack asses that I have to go help when I get done with all that. I also work out almost every day. So that's another reason I don't wanna do anything lol
