Post How much over invoice for a 01 RS Coupe

How much over invoice did you pay?

I'm supposed to pick up my 01 Coupe this week from Flatirons Subaru in Boulder, CO. They have about 10 of them on the lot. I'm hoping that I can get it for about $500 over invoice.

Am I dreaming?

Stacey

I paid about $550 over invoice for mine and got my leather seats at about $50 over cost. So, it should be possible. Good luck.

Do you generally pay more over invoice when you get more options?
I am getting mine with Leather, Sound package, and Security Package?

Also, If I want to get some other Subaru parts (Brospeed Exhaust and midpipe and short shift kit)...will they give me a deal on those...or should I buy them from subaruparts.com?

Thanks,
Stacey

DON'T get the short-shift kit! Buy the Kartboy short throw shifter. With the Cusco bushings only $125... I just installed mine this past Saturday. It's very cool. The shifts are more precise, more definative (oh yeah, shorter too ). Installed them both myself in about an hour...

Great,
Thanks for the advice..I'll most likely do that....as soon as I get my damn car!
I've been waiting for 2 months and I don't want to wait any longer.
I'm so sick of driving the SUV!

I work as a Subaru salesman and I can tell you 500 over should be no problem you should not have to pay more than 500 over just because you are getting options. Though I can tell you even if they give you a break on the price of the options they will charge you an arm and a leg for install. As to the stereo, I wouldn't get the upgraded stereo for the money it's a real disappointment. For less money you could go to a place that specializes in steros and get a better system. Any questions drop me a line.

Thumbs up

Hmmm interesting story I have.

I went to the Subaru/VW dealer and wanted to trade my 95 900 turbo coupe for a GTi 1.8. The agreed to give $13,500 for the Saab. I decided I would come back because I really wante to drive an RS first. So needless to say I got hooked on the RS after I drove it. I proceeded to call the dealer and tell them what car I wanted and they just happened to have it. So I ask if they will keep the trade in value of my Saab. They agree at 1500 over invoice and $13500 on the trade. Well... I go to get my car and as I am filling out the paper work I see a $5000. It turns out the y were only going to give me $5000 for my beloved 900. I got pissed and left without the RS. The next day The sales manager calls me and says he wasn't there that day and offers me the car at invoice!!! I took it and here I am now. I sold my other car through CARMAX.

wheeeew that was a long one

My dealer sells all their RS's for $400 over, & that's without bargaining.

Wink

If you do about 2~2.5% over invoice, I think you made out fine. You might be able to get them to go a little lower, especially with 10 of them on the lot!

Thanks for the info on the stereo, however I'm kind of stuck in the situation as I ordered this car over 2 months ago and just decided to get it with everything.

Do you think that I have any more bargaining power because I ordered it.

What about the advertising cost of $295. Is that advertising for my car...or advertising for the dealership...or advertising for Subaru in general.

Well as I ordered it, I hope that it's not advertising for my specific vehicle as they shouldn't have to advertise something that is already sold.

On the down side...they know that I want the car and I am probably willing to pay for it. I guess i have to make them believe that I will walk away and get a different vehicle if I can't get the deal that I want.

Thanks for all your help. I am a Scooby Newbie (well hopefully in a few days) and I am already enjoying this group.

Regards,
Stacey

You should take a few minutes and read ALL the buying tips at edmunds.com. You will be amazed at what you learn.

Because you oredered it, even if the dealership sells it at invoice they make a large sum of money. It's called dealer hold back. (most salesman are kept in the dark on this so that they are motivated to sell high) Basically Subaru expects the cars to be on the lot for 30-90 days before being sold. So subaru give the dealer money to hold the car, for rent, washing it, maintaining the lot etc. The sooner the car goes the more money the dealer makes off of Subaru. Being that you are picking up your car pretty much as soon as it get's there, they will make a ton off of the car.
Be firm. Just say no. And mean it. There are over 400 Subie dealers in the US. They all have RS's right now. And they all know that. So they are dealing. I would mention a competing subie dealer in the converstation too. That way they know that you have looked around and are aware of your options to go elsewhere. you ARE NOT obligated to buying the ordered Subie.

Advertising cost? Pi** on that! I would try to argue the point that you ordered your car. you did not come down after seeing a particular car in a ad or on TV. BUT, I have heard that this is a moot point and most people end up paying it.

Edmunds covers all this in greater detail. You should definatly read it all! At least go there download it to word pad, save to disk and read it at work. That's what I did. And I am VERY glad I did. Aved me money and a ton of time. I was in and out of the dealership in under an hour. He said it was a record.
Remember; "Knowledge is power."

Stacey,
I second the recommendation of reading Edmunds car buying tips. They are REALLY specific, and remember that YOU are the customer. If they won't do what you want, then walk away. You can always go somewhere else, or back there.

A note on dealer holdback, I checked on Edmunds, and there is no holdback on the RS, so don't think that they're making extra money.

I used the leather as a bargaining chip- if there's something that you want as an option, you can use it to get them to move on the price. I tried to get them to throw in the leather ($1300), but they wouldn't do it, but they did meet me halfway...

Good luck!

Faraz, I sent you an email. What kind of deal can you get me on an MY01 w/out leather. Actually, I don't care about any of the options, except for floormats. Please let me know. I am in the market for a new car.

I paid invoice for my MY01 with leather, premium audio, and security. AND I had it made to order.

I just played 2 nearby dealers against each other. "XXXX Automotive said they'd give it to me for XXX over invoice..." Very little hassle. Also look at edmunds.com. They've got a 3% dealer holdback I believe.
