Default Looking into heads for the EJ18 buildup

Alright, I need to hear from people who know the best route to take here. It starts with a simple breakdown: stay SOHC or convert to DOHC.

If I go DOHC, that'd be sweet. Would the EJ20 heads flow better than the EJ25 DOHC heads? The EJ25 duals are pretty hard to find, IIRC. One thing about going with DOHC is, I don't think I would have the money to buy aftermarket cams, so I'd be using the stockers.

If I stick with SOHC, should I convert to a different head or keep the 1.8 head. Thinking straight forward, would the EJ25 SOHC have the best flow? I'd definately be in the market for aftermarket cams if I went this route.

First priority is keeping the cost down. I would love go DOHC and get some sweet cams but that is money that I don't wanna spend. Second priority is durability. I wanna put something in there and not have to worry about my car going back into the garage and pulling the engine again. Lastly, the final priority is performance. Thanks for the help!

Brent

I dont think the EJ25 heads will work right with the 1.8 block... That might make a freakin huge difference between the valve space and the piston space that might cause problems. Im still looking into the EJ20T heads on an EJ18 block, ill be getting the heads next friday and then after that experimenting with the fit on a 1.8 block thats sitting around.

If you stay SOHC, actually the best thing to do would be find a MY97 1.8 engine which has a little more power and find out what makes that extra power then use that... Also try using some Legacy EJ22T heads, or even just the cams/valves etc. from that head because its the same design with very little differences but enough that it might make a difference...

I read a thread on here a while back that talked about coolant passages not matching up between the EJ18 and newer motors. Might want to check on that.

I dealt with that too, and from what I can tell its bogus. The coolan ports are the same on the EJ18 block as the EJ20 block because really its the same design in there exept for the larger bore cylinder walls. IE a EJ20 head will line up in that reguard fine.

The issue that im not too sure about is valve/piston head clearance... Ill find out soon enough hopefully!

Does anyone know if EJ25 SOHC cams will fit in the 1.8SOHC heads? That'd be a nice way to increase breathing without doing a whole lot of custom work......
