Default New Guy with some ???'s

new member here.

Im planning on getting a 99 2.5rs as my commuter car. Of course I am planning on putting some basic bolt ons on it. I had some questions that I hope you guys can answer.

1) What' with all the CEL's. Is the engine that sensitive to everything. Ive been reading posts for 2 days now and i'll i keep seeing are threads about the CEL, coilpacks, plugs, and wires, etc. . . ignition components, even on stock cars. so my question is: is the engine reliable or not? Right now it seems far from bulletproof (i come from owning a honda and a toyota). I dont want to buy a car and have a CEL thrown everyweek.

2) How strong are the internals on the engine? The reason I ask is b/c in the future I might plan on putting in Nitrous. (No flames please). I currently have a mr2 turbo that ran 14.01. So I would like to have a car that can run a close time. What is a safe shot/nozzle to use w/out damaging the engine. Of course I will be adding fuel support mods, fpr, better pump.

Thanks for the help guys.

Cel from mis fires aren't all that comon. Cel's from modified emission equiptment are, but aren't something to get worried about. Igniton components, plugs, wires, and coil packs, in my mind are all wear items. Some, more frequently than others.
Internals are stong, but not bulit proof. I've got no clue on nitous, but I doubt you'd be able to match your times w/ out serious work.

You'll hear a lot about CEL's and other problems because that's what people come to online forums for...help when something goes wrong. I've had lots of cars, lived on lots of forums and IMHO it's the same everywhere with most cars.

Are 2.5RS's reliable? Absolutely. And when things do go wrong, it's usually pretty minor. Like another poster said, CEL's are very frequently due to either heavily modified exhaust and/or catalytic converter quirks.

As for overall speed, etc., these are AWD cars and don't behave the same as your MR2 or other stuff out there. There's a little HP lost to the AWD system itself, and if you value your investment, you won't drop the clutch at 4,500rpm like it's an 87 mustang, because all that stress can mess up your transmission. It's not that the car's weak or unreliable, but like anything, it can be abused, and really really hard dragstrip launches in an AWD car is probably not a good idea. That said, with a full compliment of external bolt-on's (pulleys, header, exhaust, intake, blah blah) some people claim to get into the mid 14's. There are faster straight-line cars, but the RS is designed to behave like a rally car, and the result is a car that's a heck of a lot of fun to drive, especially if you mod the suspension a little.

I've had my 2000 for over a year and I love it, still glad I got it instead of the GTI, WRX and Civic Si I was also considering at the time.

Thanks for you help. That's what I was looking for. I didnt want to talk down upon it, there was just alot of posts about the CEL. I dont exepct it to behave like the MR2 (nothing will =), sorry i still like the car). But in its own respect, the RS does what it is designed to be (rally car). Thanks for your help.

Any information on the internals? How is the car for nitrous applicatoins? What is CR on a 99 2.5L engine? Thanks.

just hope you got a wednesday car like i did....i rag the crap out of my car everywhere i go, including clutch dumps to satisfy my need to feel a good rocket style launch from a red light. after 65k miles the tranny doesn't grind going into aaaany gear and the motor is strong....then there was this great idea i could turbo my car.....and that's a different story.

nah, mechanically it held up, but something went screwy electrically and it's on it's 3rd mechanic who seems to know what's up and is in the process of fixing my blunder.

IIRC, the CR on a 99RS is 9.7:1. The 99 is kind of a hard car to figure out. Somewhere in 99 they went from phase 1 engines to phase 2 engines. Depending on when your car was made you might get a phase 1 block with phase 2 heads or a complete phase 1 block and heads, or hack even a complete phase 2 engine.

I actually have no idea how to tell exactly what you have. Maybe someone else does.

is it dohc with a tick? then it's phase1 block, dohc heads (old skool)

is it sohc with a tick? then it's phase 1 block with sohc heads

is it sohc with no tick? then you got phase 2 block, sohc heads (new skool)

at least that was my understanding...
