Post Locking Fuel Door?

Has anyone noticed existing hardware for a locking fuel door in their RS? Anyone tried to utilize it? I am worried that someone has stolen gas from my car last night. The only problem was that it was at about an 1/8th of a tank last night and this morning the low fuel light was on and stayed on.

Bug:

I wouldn't be overly concerned with your change in gas gauge level.

Sometimes when my tank is low (and I know the light should be on) it won't come on until I turn off and restart the car. I sometimes get a similar small discrepancy in the fuel level. When I turn the car off it is just above the E line but when I restart, the light is on and the needle is almost below the line.

I just don't think the bob in the tank is very sensitive at the lower levels. This is typical as most tank bobs float on a shaft and travel in an arc shape. This makes the bob travel quicker through the middle of the range then at the extremes (ie the needle takes forever to drop from F and is slow to approach E.

As for locking... A friend of mine gave me a nice locking gas cap. I would check with any autoparts store and see what they have in stock. Mine is great with absolutely none of the dreaded OBDII Check Engine lights for a loose cap.

Good luck,

Kyle

PS- As a side note to this, from what I can tell some foreign Imprezas have "pull to release" gas covers. These are easy to spot as they do not have the little tab in the cover to stick your finger under.

Yeah, I thought about a locking cap. Man, the only thing I really miss about my old '93 escort was that no one could get to the gas tank. I actually did encounter an incident in my neighborhood a couple years ago when I was driving a huge station wagon. No one drove the car but me, I was the only one with keys. I filled up the car and drove it about 50 miles. The next morning the tank was on E. Very disturbing. I live in such a nice neighborhood too.

Oddly enough, Imprezas in Europe seem to have the gas flap open from within the car, as do L model Imprezas here. I just think they're copying BMW, 'cause I can't think of many Japanese cars that have manual gas tank access these days, or a least a lock on the flap.

If you get the lever that goes on the floor inside the car from an Outback or an earlier Impreza and the cable, you can make your gas door lock too. The actual "lock" is behind the black plastic in the gas fill area, and all you have to do other than that is pull the plastic clip off the door, and you're done. If you can find the part numbers, you can get all that stuff brand new from a Subaru Dealership.

Sam, that's pretty cool. Form just looking at the cap you'd swear it's just as easy to access as the cap on a pickup truck.

Has anyone done the conversion for the RS? That would make a good addition to the modifications section along with the trunk light.

I have a locking cap, I tryed my wifes gas cap off of her dodge mini-van and it fit. So I went to checkers and got a gas cap for a 97 dodge caravan. It works and I havent had any problems now for over a year.

You can get them at any dealer (the earlier Impreza model parts I'm told will fit) and that's what I ordered. You're going to have to get friendly with the parts guy and go through the huge book o' part numbers to get the part #'s (wish I could find what I did with the numbers...)

I have a remote gas door in my MY00 RS. That's what happens when you need the quarter panel replaced.

BugBomb, what would happen if you removed that little black tab and closed the door. Would the white plastic piece get into the hole and lock it. Or would it just hit the side. If it did lock like that, how would you open it.

Check the STi M-List archives. Someone (Joel? ) successfully found all the parts and part numbers for the remote gas door.

I think the biggest hassle was you need to paint a new gas door (it's flat without the finger hook), or do a significant mod to your current gas door to get it to work.

Well, if the stock door will lock, what would it matter if it had that little notch? Could you still pry it open easily?

No it would be locked, as if it were a car with a locking door, so it would be like trying to open the door on a locking car.
