Default Swapping in a JDM EJ25D?

Well, to make a long story short, I have a 98 Forester with the lovely leaky head gasketsat 150,000. I should not complain sine I got more miles than alot of you guys here. Well, head gasket job was done with all new OEM gaskets by me. Ran great for 5,000 miles but now I get a cylinder 3 misfire, compression tested look like cylinder 3 is losing compression. Found out it was the rings leaking and burnt valves. I am starting to also hear some bottom end noise. I love to Forester, so I am going to purchase a JDM 2.5 DOHC motor and perform the swap. I have one question, is this a plug and play ordeal? Thanks in advance for the replies.

if you purchase a JDM EJ25D, look at the HG as well. You just run your intake manifold on it. You'll notice the turbo-style water pump but you can still use it. Replace all gaskets and seals. You might as well do a HG job on the JDM motor too so everything is refreshed.

I rebuilt my Dad's '98 Outback motor twice. The first time without a head resurface. The 2nd time with a full resurface, redeck, rehone, new ACL Race bearings, new piston rings, all new gaskets/seals.

Swap your intake over. Be sure the engine you are getting has the port on the back of the head for the egr pipe. No jdm 2.5 dohc's had the egr, but some have the port for it with a plug in it. One other thing to look out for is some jdm 2.5 dohc phase 1 engines are starting to show up on ebay with avcs. I have no idea what the original application of these was, but you don't want one, your ecu has no way to control the avcs.

That's Phase II engines they won't fit because of different bolt pattern and width for intake manifold.

Here in the US, we never had a DOHC N/A phase 2 2.5. Ours went to SOHC when they switched to phase 2 in 99. We didn't have avcs on NA until 2006 and those were SOHC also.

These DOHC N/A 2.5 engines with avcs have started showing up on Ebay here and I've had 2 people so far ask if they could use them. I don't know what they may have come out of in Japan?

For certain Forester SF 2.5; possibly also Legacy BE/BH but I'm not sure.

The only one you can consider are the '99 Legacy 2.5GT/Outback. Those run phase2 block, crank, rods, but with phase1 heads, pistons. I've always wonered why Subaru carried over the EJ25D to yea; I suppose the Legacy still went to 1999 before the new generation in 2000.
