Post impreza or gti 1.8t?

i'm in the market for a new car here in a month or three, and i've got it narrowed down to either a GTI 1.8T or an Impreza RS Coupe. i'm just wondering what kinds of mods can be done to the impreza to make it fast. what is there in the way of aftermarket turbo/supercharger systems? . i'm new to subarus, so go easy on me. also, what things should i consider while making this decision (ie stuff that isn't widely known about subarus that might sway me over to this side)?

i've been set on a GTI (with the garrett chip of course), but i was doing some pondering yesterday and started thinking about an impreza rs...has anybody here had the same debate and ended up with the subaru?

thanks for enduring this post,

patrick

Personally, I'd go with the Impreza. This is because of handling and traction. I've driven the 1.8T and have outright scared myself at how loose it gets in the turns. Now, don't get me wrong...it's a great little car. I see them AutoXing and beating the pants off me and my whopping 137 HP.

But it all comes down to driving style. If you drive an Impreza (or other AWD) now and want a Golf, make sure to get a long test drive to make sure the car is right for you. Personally, if I were to buy a 2WD car, it would be a Golf GTI VR6 or 1.8T. However, I'm an AWD geek.

Trunkmonkey is here! There is no cone...

I had the same dilemma. 1.8T four-door Golf versus Impreza 2.5RS sedan. I had a love affair with VW for a while, always liked 'em.
Owned a 1994 Acura Integra RS coupe previously. Loved that car...but... wanted something new.

The 1.8T was wonderful, great build quality and lots of nifty gadgets... but no AWD, and a much looser chassis. It was a tough choice going with Subaru though, I SORELY miss the versatility of a hatchback car.

I don't think the turbo/engine upgrade market for Subaru is that great right now, or at least what there is, is far from cheap. The Garrett chip is wonderful... and no I don't think there's anything like that for Subaru.
I keep hoping, though!

I thought about the GTI too ...the aftermarket is alot better, but I love the AWD and the handling on the GTI is nothing compared to the RS ....you can do things in a stock RS that aftermarket GTI's still can't do...both good cars ...but i think the RS looks better, GTI screams H.S. student to me for some reason.

I think the Impreza shouts HS student because of the wings & scoops & lights. The GTI is a classier design that looks unique & good at the same time.

I love Golfs. They're just awesome.

Few people love hatchbacks, but I sure do.

If you test drive both of them like I did before I got my car you will know which one I ended up with. The RS of course.

Though I do love Volkswagens I was tired of boring front wheel drive. I used to have a 95 Saab 900 turbo. Fast car. Horrible tranny.

yeah, i'll definitely have to test drive an impreza before i start making up my mind, but i'm not planning on buying until about thanksgiving-christmas.

i know the subaru aftermarket is limited, but what kinds of things are out there (chips, intakes, exhausts, suspension, maybe cams) ? can somebody point me to a web site where i can get an idea of how much impreza parts go for? what would be involved in getting a 2.5 RS down to 6.5-7.0 second range for 0-60 (just to compare it with a chipped 1.8T, my other main choice right now)? dare i ask a cost?

about the WRX, i wouldn't be here asking these questions if i had $25-26k to put into a car....if i did, there'd already be a deposit check at the subaru dealer ....man oh man that looks like a fun car, despite the "new" styling and the lack of a coupe model

thanks again for putting up with me. i am indeed a "scooby newbie", and i always think "geez this guy is an idiot" whenever people post questions like that on the vortex...goes easy on me, ok?? even if i do eventually go with the GTI, the imprezas will forever be killing me at the autocrosses (current car VW Corrado SLC),

thanks again,
patrick

pman81 -

I currently own a '96 GLX - less refined, but faster than the current VW crop (thanks to no drive-by-wire crap).

My advice cannot be put into simpler language: Wait for the WRX.

When I first got my car, I thought that being able to spin the tires was cool. Yeah, its damn powerful - but WAY too often, the tires are spinning when I want to be driving.

Ever been blown away from the light by a SUV? I have. Ever suck exhaust fumes in the rain and snow from Ford Exploders? Be prepared year-in and year-out. It is frustrating beyond comprehension to have a great engine and be hamstrung by limited traction.

A 1.8T with a garrett chip will beat my car in good weather. In bad weather, we'll be staring at each other sideways while the wheels spin. Do you know what it feels like to sit at the light and slide down the grading of the road while the tachometer says 5000 rpm? GRRRRR!!!!

Join me at the suby dealer this spring. You won't regret it.

Edit: Don't type after a bottle of wine . . .

BTW, the 2001 GTI's come standard with the new Sports Suspension package. Im not sure whats in it, but it should improve the handling a bunch.

If I were to currently spend $20k on a car, I'd get a Impreza or Golf... probably the Golf for the space. Plus, I would get the chip mod, one of those kick arse factory spoilers that go over the hatch door, and some of those 17 inch rims... ive seen a few driving around, and they look sweet to say the least...

Of course, for $25k wait for the WRX

pman81,

You asked about web sites with more info. Check out www.ImprezaRS.com for over 600 searchable links, and you'll see what's out there. I even sell cold air intakes and other stuff from there.

Larry www.ImprezaRS.com

PS: I wanted the GTI VR6 and my wife hated the looks. While at the VW dealer, I spotted the Subaru's they also sell, and drove the RS and Legacy GT and the RS was so much quicker handling, and with AWD my mind was made up. My wife liked the looks, and that clinched it.

I was in the same situation earlier this year and ended up finding a 99.5 MKIV GTI GLX for 17000$. So I went with the GTI.

But...if it were new vs. new I would probably go for the RS in a sedan as I need the access to the rear seat that the coupe doesn't have.

I actually took one out a few weeks ago. Very nice and refined but floaty handling and REALLY vague shifter.

I also raced one this morning on the way to work.

I won.

Hey I heard the new GTi has optional 17"!!! Wow! My friend has a JEtta VR6 with sport tuned suspension and it sux! It's even worse than my stock OBS suspension in terms of body roll and the amount of vagueness. I think if you want luxury but cannot afford an Audi or a bimmer then a nicely clad VW is the way to go. But for driving experience.... man it's hard to beat an Impy.

VW - "Drivers Wanted".... cus no real drivers want them.
