I think you're right... the sports segment doesnt get marketed much. I mean there are plenty of commericals toting the sportiness of cars that arent real sports cars (Maxima anyone?) But startling few commericals for the true sports segments.

Come on haven't you noticed that some companies are just letting GT2 do all the advertising for them? maybe that's what Subaru is doing. Why not after all its free publicity. The people who want performance usually know more then the average person anyways.

At the NCAC autocross yesterday Dale Teague and I wee standing beside our cars when a spectator walks up to look at our cars. The first thing out of his mouth was "I've never heard of anybody racing a Subaru." Our response was that after this year he would be hearing about it all the time. And yet again, Three Subaru's showed up. Three classes were won by Subaru. As a matter of fact Deadbolt won the North Carolina DSP season championship yesterday.

I like the fact that there are no commercials for the RS, it just goes to show the people who own them are very unique, and did there homework when they chose a car that has no commericals backing it. I like people saying "what kind of car ist that?" "Ive never seen that before." Dont you all like that feeling? I do. Do you want people to say o look an impreza. Sorta sounds like Oh look another Si. I want them to say wow what the hell is that that just blew by me? hehe I guess there are advantages and disadvantages.

When Japan sent the RS here, they said, "Let's give THIS to the Americans!"
I kinda think there is more potential with the less sporty (less sportier?) Subarus. Jon at JC Sports has proven this with a 1.8L that spanks most RS'. What most of them don't know is that his car weighs less than an RS and has coilovers to boot.
Hehehe...nice little surprise there. So what if we really don't have access to the WRX! We actually have more access to subaru's larger motor, the 2.5, AND the turbo equipment, AND the suspension equipment. In Europe, and I think Japan, they tax vehicles based on displacement. Thus, you have the 2.0 Turbo instead of a 2.5 turbo. I just think Americans actually do have a damn good deal, no matter how many spoiled brats demand more like always.

Question

when i tell people that my next car is gonna be an Impreza RS, they're like "Impreza? who makes that?"
And when i tell them its by Subaru, a japanese auto-maker, they say "Subaru? aren't they American/European?"
I just shake my head, and walk away.

I have the subaru world rally team light jacket, and i wore it to school today. This one kid said to me "Why would you buy a subaru jacket, they make crappy cars, hehe"
I then proceeded to "educate" him about impreza's. Doesn't seem like he cared. Anyway's just sharing my story.
P.S. many of my friends know about the impreza, because of me, and i think that's cool.

I've found putting pictures of the WRC car in action on your desktop helps co-workers accept that the Impreza IS a sports car and will walk all over their cars.

The first Impreza I had ever seen, pic or real, was on CarPoint and I've been hooked ever since.

I found that once I stripped off the SUBARU and all other logos/stickers the car caused more mental carnage than before. People always looked and gawked but now they don't find a clue about who makes it. I would just assume that the Impreza numbers stay as they are. It is nice to know that you are different and rare. On the occasion that I see another RS on the road there is usually an exchange of horns or lights, I like that.

Yes. The #3 reason Im attracted to the Impreza more than any car is the "rarability" factor... I HATE looking like everyone else... (reason #1 is handling, #2 is AWD)

Whats wrong with some of the WRX's coming to America with Auto? Some of us poor unlucky bastards didnt get a chance to learn to drive stick at least sportshift might be availible, so when I do get one eventually, I can at least learn to shift

Tip to everyone: If you want to prove to people that Subarus are not the wagons they are percieved to be, drive like a bat outta hell and show em what they can do! j/k
(works with my moms Legacy GT Limited Sedan though... turns heads just as well as the Impreza)

People,

The reason why so few Imprezas are sold is because (as we all know) only those with outstanding and discerning taste own them.

Well said Markus!
We drive quirky cars....just face it!
Just want to remind you that in Canada, there's a TS commercial that runs periodically during their iron man triathlon competitions....along with Foresters and Outbacks and Legacy commercials.

i got some really wierd looks when i first got my car (98 green RS). and people still say, "that's a SUBARU?"
Yeah i realize that the impreza rs was never meant to take off here in the states, but isn't that just a good example of SOA not doing their homework! For the money they make, i think that SOA could do a better job of marketing and PR.

Kostamojen,

If you have an automatic, you are missing out on much of the fun. I think Mike Shields (spdusa.com) sums it up best in his "driving tips" section:

"One cannot finely modulate light and non-brake pedal induced deceleration rates with automatics. These inputs are the critical ones for turn-in because they control the weight transfer, front to back, and that controls whether the car is going to pay attention to your feet or your hands or both, or not at all.

Cool

Being a Scot in exile, I had first had knowledge of the real thing back home (WRX), then coming over here and asking the dealer for one he looked at me like I had two heads....
"O we only have 2.2 or 2.5...."
"Ok let me try the 2.5"

"Mmmm, WTF."
"ok so this is it ?"
"Yes sir"

Then at work, i run into the wtf is that thing. After a few runs in the car and kicking there arse's all over the place, they started to release what a great packeage I had. Actually some of my co workers now follow the WRC and PR on speedvision, and the 2 that have driven the car are looking at buying one.

Sean.
