Default How legal are jdm motor swaps?

I was browsing through threads and read about how no jdm motor is legal to swap into any us car. Is this true?? It was said that for individuals caught it is a fine of $2500!!

Now i'm not too worried about getting caught since I am military stationed in another state than my car is registered, plus back home in texas at least where i live there wouldn't be a problem locally. My question is just whether it IS illegal or not. I thought that as long as you could pass whatever inspection is required you were fine, or as long as the motor you put in your car was the same year or newer you were fine also. Would it matter if the engine codes were the same as another us motor that is in production here(i know they don't have the same emissions) such as the ej20?

I'm not trying to preach about how its illegal or not(I'm still going to do it) but I just don't see that many people talk about it let alone take it into consideration, i think its a risk that should be addressed so everyone is aware of consequences that may or may not happen.

Is it legal? Generally not, but the specifics of this do vary from state to state. Is it possible to pass it off as a US swap and get it legally registered? Yes, it has been done. And if you live in a more liberal state even that won't matter. My girl's car is registered in Montana and those folks have no emissions standards to speak of...

If you run a USDM ECU, and have a motor dated newer than your model year, it really is near impossible for anyone to even tell.
