Exclamation Wrx Write Off, Bad Accident

Coming around a blind corner last nite, the posted speed was 55 Km/h I was doing about 55-60 km/h, slowing down, when I got around the corner, it was much tighter then expected, tried cutting in tight to stay in my lane, The Car started Fish Tailing really badly. I hit the shoulder of the road, spun, flipped, and slid through the ditch until I hit a telephone pole. The airbags didnt' deploy, and I was ok, good thing I was wearing my seatbelt. Anyways, I really thought that my 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX was going to make it out of that fish tail, but it didn't, now it's a write off. Just wondering if anyone else has had a situation like this occur to them? ???

The posteed speed was 55? Was that the speed limit on the road or the "caution" for the corner? I wouldn't think you would have any problem going around a corner if you were going the posted limit....wouldn't every car going around there run into the same problem?

well... that would happen if you hydroplane.... It happened to me when I got into a DEEP water puddle and luckily, mine wasn't completely damaged. I think this is due to the CRAPPY stock RE-92 tires.....

Maybe you hit some black ice? Maybe there was gravel on the road?

Perhaps you took the corner too fast for the conditions - that's what it sounds like to me. Sounds like you got onto the brakes to try to slow your car down, which transfered weight onto the front wheels, which caused your back end to come out.

I had a similar situation happen to me in my RS last year, but luckily for me, I didn't loose my car. Came off of the highway going at about 80km/h onto the off ramp - nice right-hand sweeper. It wasn't raining, but the roads were wet. Since I was going in too hot, my front end started understeering, so I pressed on the brakes, which caused my back end to come out. If I didn't get onto the brakes, I would have hit the outside barrier. Since I braked, my back end starte comming out on me and I would have ended up in the grass and possibly flipping my car. Luckily, I reacted right away - got off of the brakes, countersteered slightly, and gave it just a wee bit of gas to get the car under control. Then I got off of the gas, and let the car slow itself down.

It could have been really ugly. A simple trip to Ikea for some boxes could have become costing me a lot more money, and possibly a box for me to live permanently in.

Sorry to hear 'bout your accident.

LaterZ!
Darren!!

one thing i learned 2 years ago. RE92's + slippery surface on corner = horrific

not a write off, but it could have been avoided if my tires didnt roll onto their sidewalls when my tires slipped on gravel and put me sideways (once the tires caught the pavement again they just flopped over and played dead like a possum).

sorry about your car

sorry to hear about that, poor car but you are in one piece still.
I agree those re92's are truely the worst tires in the world, its like the side walls are made of processed cheese and grip about the same

sorry guy, but I'm calling bullsh7t on the 55-60kmh you were travelling. The WRX is a heavy car, and much of that weight is very low. Along with the AWD system, ABS, and suspension setup that was designed to eat up low traction surfaces, you should have driven away with minor understeer.

For you to have
Quote:
I hit the shoulder of the road, spun, flipped, and slid through the ditch until I hit a telephone pole.
I would be led to believe that you were doing at least 20-30km over the posted limit. An object in motion remaims in motion, but only until other things come into play, like telephone poles, ditches, and shoulders. For you to go through all of those means you were going way too fast for the turn.

I drive my WRX like it's a go-cart, and it has been nothing but good to me. It does NOT lose it's tail very easily, and a 50kmh turn will not be too much for it to handle.

*edit: Are we not old enough to use the word sh7t without it being censored?

Personally, you can't blame the tires - you have to blame the driver. It's the driver's responsibility to be in complete control of the vehicle. If the tires on the vehicle do not perform well, the the vehicle must be driven in a manner that the tires have adequate traction.

...first of all, sorry to hear that and glad u are ok..

but IMO, u must have been entering the turn really fast or sth...

i'm not trying to be a pro here, but the re92s have been holding up fine for me...sure they are crappy in the rain...but nothing too bad that would cause fish tail (only understeer)...

and yea stop blaming the tires...if people realize that these re92s are *****ty tires, maybe it would be smart if they take it easy and not go crazy on road..

btw, where is the scene? just curious..

Unhappy

Fish tailing in AWD? The RE92's break away quite softly and are kind to the driver. That's why Subaru put them on the car. Throttle modulation can make the car dance in a drift if you are skilled.

If you did some acrobatics in the WRX you must have been either going way too fast or turning way too agressively. The WRX even with RE92's and slippery surface can easily take corners at 70-80Kmh.

Were the tire pressures ok? Sounds fishy to me.

Time for handling course me thinks.

Glead to hear you are ok.

yea I call bs as well.. I've had to go around 90deg corners at around 80kph+(on empty roads) in the wet at least to let my tail even begin to break loose like what you described. Even that 270degree turn coming out of Richmond from bridgeport my car would be understeering at any speed within 20kph of the speed limit. (AND this is recently tested on the shtty re92s)

there is no way you could lose it at 55-60kph..

I'd have to agree, that's a pretty slow speed for it to be anything but driver error.. Well unless your RE92s looked like mine when I wrote off my 02 WRX?

Even then, it's still driver error, cause I'm responsible for the condition and maintenance of my car, if I had been looking at the inside of the tire, noticed the wear, and taken it into consideration, I would be sill driving an '02 WRX with a %40 insurance rebate.

Sucks, but atleast you're trying to learn.. Post some nasty pics!

420WRX, I like your attitude.

and cheers to the rest.
I'm not trying to start an argument, or be a dick, all I'm saying is that the chassis is capable, and I'd hate to have someone decide to buy a new RSX because someone else led them to believe that the car is unstable, or hard to control.

I don't like to see any WRX's involved in accidents, but at least you live to drive again.

On a side note, I think I'll be going up to Yale this weekend to try out my new Whiteline coilovers with adjustable EVERYTHING!

Lowered WRX's are cool, but they suck in the dirt. Adjustable height WRX's, now that's the way to do it.

And with hypa's remarks, I'll now close this thread. InstantWRX, we're all sorry to hear about your mishpa. I'm sure everything all happened within a blink of an eye. I know for me, for the accidents I've been involved with, everything happened within a split second.

Do feel free to post and participate here on nasioc.
