Default 02 WRX engine vin tag question

I just bought an 02 WRX engine and I'm trying to figure out if it is what the guy says it is.

There is a VIN type part number tag on the left head, near the transmission. The tag has a barcode and this number:

EJ205AW3B9 - 1E5 - 8279

I'm guessing that the EJ205A is the engine... but are the last 4 digits the last 4 digits of the VIN?

BTW, the transmission decal reads: 7Y - TY754VN2BA

Here's a pic of the VIN plate the guy claims the engine came from.

I'm trying to figure out if the guy did a bait and switch on me with a JDM. He claimed it was a US version 02 WRX w/12k

Its a early version GDA you can tell by the Vin part that says GDAAYXX. The A after the GDA would tell you its a Ver I GDA model! Also I think the last year for the 205 (I might be wrong) is 00'. As I have a STi 01 and it has a 207 in it. I am not sure what you are asking but look on the timing belt cover as in your facing the front of the engine on the right on top of the timing belt cover there should be a sticker silver with something to this nature on it 10 which would indicate at 100000 km change the belt!!!! If there is a sticker there I would assume its a JDM if not its probable a USDM!!!

My IME is not working but it will say 10 with kanji beside it. I am assuming the USDM engines would not have this sticker!!!

2002 Impreza WRX

Default Vin

The vin matches a us wrx 5MT 4 dr sedan

first 3 = JF1 = passanger car FHI made
4th digit = G = Impreza
5th digit = D = 4 door sedan (G = wagon)
6th digit = 2 = 2 liter AWD turbo (6=2.5 L awd)
7th digit = 9 = wrx (8=outback, 7=RS,5=TS)

10th digit = 2 = 2002 MY, (3 = 2003)
11th digit = G = 5mt full time AWD (H=AT4 full time AWD)

12 - 17 = from 500001 = 4dr sedan, (from 800001 = wagon)

The engine code is EJ205AW3B9

EJ=4 cyl
20 = 2.0 L
5= MPI turbo
A = US federal and California exhaust regs
3= minor change 3 applied
B9=digits 9-10= detailed specs see parts catalog for details

Model number on vin plate

D= 4door sedan (G=wagon)
A= 2.0 L AWD turbo
A= initial minor change
Y = Left hand drive US and Canada
8= WRX (4=TS, 6=RS,7=Outback)
D= DOHC B MPI 5 speed MT AWD
(R= SOHC MPI 4 speed AT, P= DOHC B MPI 4 speed AT, J= SOHC MPI 5 speed MT AWD)

So, can anyone verify if the last 4 digits of the engine code sticker match the VIN plate?

Meaning, that the last four, "8279" of the barcoded label on the head should match the VIN tag right?

If not, the tag would be from another car?

It looks like the VIN tag reads "8497"...

Not that it matters that much, but the guy is a little flakey and still owes me an engine harness to the ecu.
