Question Upstate NY owners

Somebody at work just told me that when I move back and move to the Rochester area I won't hae to worry about the emissions test. Is that true? Isn't there still a yearly inspection? Does it just skip the emissions test part? If this is true I guess I will be looking for a turbo when I get back. I know there is testing in and around NYC but wasn't aware of anything around the Rochester area. Yet another reason to move away from Maryland!

There's still an annual inspection, but it doesn't test for emissions unless you are in the NYC area.

You are correct sir! There is indeed no sniff test for inspections in the rochester area. Honestly the don't even look. Just check the lights and off you go! So, you moving to Roch. area? Well I am in Irondequoit. Let me know when you'll be around.

Yep I will be moving to the Rochester area as soon as I get done here in Japan. So that would be around Feb of next year. I will be back in the area in Sept or so. Its good to know I won't have to deal with the smognazi's and I can have a turbo. So are there alot of club type of stuff up there and hows the auto-x? I will be moving out in one of the suburbs around the East View Mall. That way I will be close to my work.

Thumbs up

As far as Impreza type club stuff, not too much to speak of. However, the auto-x scene is great. Our street mod class is very compeditive. Moles93 runs a turboed 98RS in SM, I kinda own street touring (not too arrogant!) And there are about three or four other RS's that occasionally show up. The TSD rally scene is good here too, if that's your bag.

An early welcome to the land of no sun and too much rain & snow.
The only catch to the NYS inspection is that a cat must be present (for the appropriate MY). It doesn't need to function; it just needs to be there.

The SCCA is very active in the area, as well as in other areas of Upstate NY.

N/A make sure you drop us some sort of line once you get here...

I moved from Buffalo about a year ago and there is no emissions testing there. The inspection they have is pretty routine. Check brakes, lights, parking break, tires and turn signals, not to much else other than that. So, you could potentially do whatever you want with the turbo and get a sticker. Just find yourself a good shop and your set!

Cool

VanBortel Subaru in Victor (just southeast of the city) is where I take mine, and I've been pleased so far. They say they are the largest Subaru dealer in the U.S.

Kinda OT but...

Anyone in the Buffalo area? I'll be moving there next month and I was wondering in what parts of the city should I look for an apartment. Cost/safety are priorities. Also like to know of a good Subie dealer in case I require any warrenty work. Thanks.

Mike Smith- you found a dealership that does aftermarket work? Isn't that place a little ways farther outside of Rochester then the East View Mall? I know the turn off for Victor is on the same road. Any of you take trips up to the Toronto guys to see one of their events?

Hey, N/A, you said your work is right by EastView Mall? Where abouts? I work about a 2 minute drive from there.

As for the place that does aftermarket work, would you guys be talking about the palce on Rt. 96 that is always selling redone Vettes and stuff? If you are, I believe they had a Diablo out there like last week... very nice (I am not too familiar with the area, but that definitely caught my attention). Dunno about them doing work on sube's though.

Giulio,
What/Where is your brother's shop? I have a funny problem with my '99 RS that VanBortel's couldn't figure out and am not sure where to take it!!!

Chris

I'm putting in to go to work for Sun which is about three blocks from the mall. I used to work for TEK Systems until I left for Japan. TEK Systems is right down the road from Sun also. I don't really like that mall but the area is nice. I have had enough of living near the larger cities. Oh and I didn't think the winter weather was tough there. It can't be worse then the 221.1 inches of snow this place got this year.

Wink

Worse than 220+" of snow? Nope, but we do average ~120".

About a good race oriented installer in the Rochester, I personally only know of one: Eksten's Autoworks near Kodak park in the city. They did the Minnam Stage 2 on my car and are pretty well respected among the locals. Mine is the only only Sube they had worked on at the time, but they are the only place I'm willing to take either of my cars for most race stuff (300ZX being the other car). Van Bortel has been fine for miscellaneous stuff, but their focus is NOT aftermarket by any stretch of the imagination. They (actually Jeff, their master tech) did fix a Minnam related exhaust leak and some other non-stock stuff, but they really cater to the average Sube off the street.

Also- Van Bortel is about 7 minutes further
east on 96 past Eastview.
That Diablo/Vette place is "Turner." I'm no authority on service locations, but no one I race with or hang with has ever used them for anything that I know of.
