Question I'm 16, race go-karts, and i am looking for sponsorship!

I am sixteen years old and currently race go-karts in Ontario, Canada. I
have raced go-karts for the past five years in Honda 4-stroke engine
classes. This year, I made the jump to the very competitive Senior ranks and
have had some success with a couple of wins. Right now, I am in contention
for second place in points in my club! Next year, I plan to race karts yet
again but would love to move up to the Yamaha (2-cycle) or shifter classes.
But, as in any form of motorsport these days, sponsorship is of importance
and is very difficult to come by. I am posting on this board to see if
anyone might have some realistic ideas of sponsorship proposals or if anyone
works for a company that may be interested in expanding their advertising to
include the motorsport world. I am willing to accept product or financial
support from any company!

I am very willing to publish my sponsors extensively. This will include
numerous company logos on the kart, my driving suit, and on my trailer.
Also, as part of the sponsorship package, I am also extremely willing to
provide the sponsor with photographs and other media. In addition, I have
plans to create a website with pictures, results and sponsor information.

I feel that go-kart advertising provides an excellent opportunity for any
company, as it is very much a family sport the participants range in age
from 7 to 70! On any given race day, there are a 100 entries, plus 150 to
200 spectators at the track all whom will be exposed to your company name.
Go-karting is a growing sport and is well worth getting involved with.

Dude, congratulations, I only could race for 2 seasons with a Yamaha. That's REAL racing, keep it up! do not change for car racing...
anyway, for sponsorship, if you're still buying products yourself, try then with an Oil supplier (motul, they're currently sponsoring me in Solo 1), race engine builder ( I had D'Agostino engines in Florida), chassis Dealer( I raced TopKart), Maybe Sparco for a suit, gloves and balaclava, or try to became a Team Driver. Have you seen the Tony Kart Team? They get to race for free!!
I think you will not find sponsors out of the Kart world...been there.
Remember that a sponsor will give you products if you help sell them, maybe selling stuff at the track may give you that stuff free for you...
There may be a Kart dealer nearby, try to be their friend, look for part time job with them, even if you have to clean parts, but they'll think your are serious and will help you.
That thing with the pictures and public relations is for INDY or Pros only, that would be too easy...

Good luck!

Jose

PS Read DRIVE TO WIN by Carroll Smith, he has good hints for sponsorship and racing in general, I call that book my own Racing Bible

actually i am a factory driver for a small canadian kart manufacturer. I get karts for free but engines, tires, and entry fees are still my responsibility! and motors are the killer!! So for these expenses there is really no product sponsorship. Because in We run a spec dunlop tire, and engines builders are usually not willing to sponsor a driver.

Gosh, if it wasn't so much trouble to ship my products to Canada I would be a sponsor. Get UPS to sponsor you and drop the broker fee's for all your other sponsors, and I'm in...

I had a friend that raced with us that had sponsorship directly with D'agostino Engines in Florida, he used to buy from him, then he started winning championships with such engine. The builder built "works" engines for him for free and he won the Florida Regional Championship. Problem was that he would take for ever to rebuilt a unit.
If you are going into Yamaha, learn how to rebuilt the cylinder and maybe you can rebuilt someone elses and make some money. Those engines are easy but tricky to make go fast.
For tires, you'll just have to buy them. If you are racing twice a month, in Yamaha (too competitive) you'll need 2 sets of tires a month cause you need to have the softest compound you can buy. Just make friends at the tire dealer and maybe you'll get discounts.
What kind of chassis are you currently using? Are they competitive in Yamaha?
Although Yamaha is very competitive, you have an advantage of weight, I raced against a 15 year old kid that was not only fast but he could race at the weight limit in Lights.
Don't know man, get a mentor...

Good luck!!

Jose

Well, you said you need engines, tires and entry fees...

However, as far as the shipping problems, Canada charges duties, and brokers charge a chunk of money, so not many people from Canada want to buy.

I don't feel very comfortable lying to USPS that it is a gift so as to avoid duties and broker fees.

Maybe next year will be a better time to sponsor you. Will you email me and remind me later?

Larry
