Post Richard buys WRC TV Rights

David Richards, head of Prodrive and Subaru's WRC team, has purchased the company with TV rights for the World Rally Championship from Bernie Ecclestone. Look for big changes in coverage.

Yah I always wondered why they spend 20min of the half hour showing the surrounding countryside and then show us only small bits of the actual race. I mean come on I want more then the sarting line and the finish line. Let's see some start to finish coverage with helicopters, and rail mounted cameras above the track. I don't want to miss a single mud splatter! I want a pre-race show, the actual race and a post-race wrap up.

I just hope that he doesn't water down the events. The recent 'TV stage' rule is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. It's taking the event in the wrong direction IMHO.

'TV stages' are special stages that are televised (live?). Even if a competitor crashes out , they are allowed back for the 'TV stages' and can even earn points! Once you crash out, you're out. Just because TV coverage enters the picture shouldn't mean that the rules for rallying should be bent and twisted all around. OK, even though the competitors are only allowed back in the rally for these stages, it still doesn't seem right.

I guess I will just have to wait and see. Since David Richards is a fan, I know he will do his best to promote rallying even though it is already the 2nd most popular form of motorsport in the world.

Yes, Autosport had a very nice article about two months ago when the deal was made. I was very happy to see this happen since there were rumors that the only reason why Richards sold 49 percent of Prodrive was to get money to enter F1. He said in the article that his whole plan was to have the funds available in order to become more involved with the WRC and promoting it, and that's why he sold a chunk of Prodrive.

He also said that for the next 6 months, he will meet with people and discuss different options and then make plans from the 2001 season.

Not that I ever met the guy or anything, but just by reading some of the things he says and after watching some of his interviews, the man just seems brilliant. I would think only good things can come of this, but we'll see.

The deal to the TV rights was said to be in the 50 million dollar range.

Good... maybe he'll get smart and negotiate to broadcast it on ESPN.

Hey ESPN now that would be convenient for the US. Are they still bringing one event to the US? They can always toss out the laws, WRC rules and common sense for one event and hold it in some of the more rural areas of the US. Man would it be cool to here one of those Tractor Pull style radio ads promoting the WRC. Race Fans, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY coming to your area the WRC in a no holds barred winner take all race. No pit crews, no permits for the event, no warning to the locals, not even common sense to stop or slow down when they get a flat tire. Its your favorite WRC drivers and their kick ass cars! No wait sorry we already have those. Except they drive under the FIA title of police pursuits. Sorry my bad. It will be nice to see more coverage and better quality coverage at that.
