Default USDM and Power Steering

What power steering lines did you use when you did your swap? I've got a 1996 L and my power steering lines do not mate up in the same way as the WRX does. Do any late-model power steering lines work or do I need the WRX lines? Will the WRX lines bolt up to my L rack ok?

Any lines that have a remote reservior should work. You will need to fabricate a bracket to hold it in place. You should be able to use either Forster or WRX lines.

Which cars came with the remote reservoir? Foresters from what year?

Thanks,

Im not sure of this, but I believe that the two lines flip around somewhat between model years. When I rebuilt my pump, I was going to just swap in an RS one, but ya the brackets are in different spots AND the lines are the opposite to how they connect with the power steering rack.

But a good solution might be some custom braided steel lines, those used to come on some turbo kits for RS's, and someone had a pic of them on one of the other forums... Looked like a good idea, cause you could use it to get all those lines out of those way rather easily.

That is a good idea, except I need the fittings at the power steering pump. My L pump just used hoseclamps to attach but the WRX uses a banjo bolt.

So get the WRX PS lines why go half assed on items like suspension, steering and brakes. I know the Forester ones work and I know the WRX ones work as well. If you are gonna go and pull them from a junkyard you should be able to tell just by looking at them if they will work or not. Being that the Forester and the Impreza come off the same line the steering system is almost the same.

The lines run $180 brand new at my cost (which is considerably better than retail). I'll have to see if I can source some at a yard tomorrow.

a lil off topic, but do you guys know about what steering racks are compatible w/ what models? I have a 93 L and the dealership says i need a new rack due to the loss of my power steering.

This might not be too much help, but I can pretty much guarantee that a WRX rack won't work unless you modify (probably by cutting/welding) the universal joint assembly for the steering. The splines on the wrx power steering rack were different than the ones on my 95 L.
