Those Puma's are great. Before i moved from UK to US a year ago i was just about to buy a Puma (Impreza Turbo would've been too expensive for me).
The Racing Puma mentioned is extremely limited edition. The showroom model comes in th 1.4 and 1.7. Neither are particularly fast (slower than RS) but boy are they fun! I think the Puma's are getting discontinued in a few years time, something about Ford not being able to justify the cost. |

The Puma is built in Europe i think. It's the cougar (big brother of the Puma) which is built in the US and shipped over.

IMO Ford should use this car instead of the Focus for Rallying. It looks a hell of alot better than a Focus. I like the looks of the Puma. I saw the back of one once on my way to Luxembourg from Trier. He had that thing wound out. Faster than a stock civic thats for sure.

And Evo magazine (May 2000) said this
![]() it's outright performance is lack lustre it's the sort of car you steer around potholes - and that generally bodes ill for wet weather performance lean harder though and the front quickly washes out, so a quick lap becomes an excercise in containing front end slip Whoops...... Richard |

They are talking about the Ford Puma, a car based upon the Fiesta platform. SCC did an article on the Puma last year; I forget which month. I saw them a lot when I was working in Dublin; very cute looking, though not as convenient as say a Fiesta. But when you're dealing with cars that small, I guess it's not such a big deal, and the Puma's supposedly got better handling.
Anyway, Ford released a limited production Racing Puma at the beginning of the year. Kind of like the 22b, it is an upgraded Puma with big fenders and 17" wheels, and of course, a blue paint scheme like the Civic Si and Subaru's RBP. It was in the February (I think) issue of Car magazine, and I saw an article on it on a BBC auto program. It makes about 150 hp, which is pretty good for such a small car, and while it's probably not as fast as a UK Impreza, it can handle as well or better. Plus it would be easier to park and drive on the roads over there. The problem is Ford is selling it for something like 23,000 Pounds, about two grand more than an Impreza. Alright. Alright.
So the Puma isn't in the same league as the Impreza Turbo, never mind the 22B ![]() However it is a lot cheaper to buy, to run and insurance is very reasonable (in standard form anyway). Re FIA Rally, it wouldn't make any sense for Ford to use the Puma. It's too much of a niche car, and success in racing wouldn't translate to big enough sales boosts. Most if not all of the rally cars are mainstream models e.g. impreza, lancer, 206 etc. |

The regular Puma, if marketed here, would be snatched up by women. It looks kinda like a Sunbird.
But that limited edition - wow. Fender flares sure make a big character display, huh? |
