Question Kinda OT: Anyone know where to get 16" steelies?

My older brother has a 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero, which is currently riding on the stock 17" BBS wheels (tres sweet wheels) and Michelin MXM HX summer tires. Not so good in the snow, what with the 3 nearly solid bands of rubber dominating the tread pattern. So, he's looking for some winter tire action, and is trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

The car has pretty good sized front brakes, so (from what I've learned online) 16"ers are required to clear. Again from what I've learned online, Saab did offer the 9-3 with 16" steelies, so I know they're out there, it's just a matter of finding them. With as many Saabs as there are on the road, one would think it would be pretty easy to find some wrecked ones to "donate" wheels, but it seems like scrapyards have become such an overpriced racket these days. The one near me that we tried didn't even mention steelies, just wanted to go straight to take off alloys at $165 each.

I've got my eyes on a couple Ebay deals on 16" Saab alloys, but ideally I'd like to find some nice, cheap steelies for him to throw on the car. Anybody have any connections or know where I should look?

Thanks!

I would think that if they had steelies that fit the car, they'd be available from tire rack. There are 13 16" wheels listed here:
http://www.tirerack.com/snow/SnowWhe...show=allWheels

3 of them are under $130.

Yup.....the 16" steels on my wife's OBW are from Tire Rack. For some reason, they don't come up online...you have to call and ask.

I got my winter steelies from the rack for 49 bucks a piece. There not the prettiest things in the world, but I won't ruin my prodrives.

C'mon, guys, do you think I'm some sort of amateur??!! I tried the Tire Rack, they're out of both steelies and Saab take-off alloys, and don't foresee getting any in the near future.

I may have just found some at www.1010tires.com , gotta do some searching online and find out the Saab offset and bolt pattern. I think they're the same bolt pattern as Subie - 5x100mm - but not sure on offset. Aside: Hmmmmm, wonder if I should test fit my sister's WRX wheels....

Hey, it's my brother's car, dammit! For me, snow tires aren't a concern in Hawaii. I'm just tryin' to help out my ever-procrastinating brother while I'm home for the holidays.

Jonathan, thanks for the link, I just dropped them a parts quote request. We'll see what that turns up.

I've tried Direct Tire, no dice there. Haven't tried Unique Wheels, never heard of 'em, but I think 1010tires.com is going to be the one.

Same to you, Dave.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming... No dice with 1010tires, they're sold out of the wheels they used to have. Plus, stealing my sister's wheels won't work, either - turns out the Saab is a 5x110mm bolt pattern. Never heard of that one before.

I called and talked to 1010tires and the guy there said the Saturn L-series (a distant cousin through the extended GM family) uses the same bolt pattern, offset, and hub diameter. He said that some of the L-Series cars came with 16" steelies that would be a direct fit. However, checking Saturn's website I only see 15" steelies and 16" alloys. Hmmmm.... I only checked the last two model years, though, so I'll try looking back a couple years and doing some more searching on the 'net to see what I can find. Crazy stuff, I tell ya!
