Angry piston slap rod knock...engine overhaul

hey guys,

I have a 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5 rs and it's been causing me alot of headache lately. In February my car started to make a quiet ticking noise when the motor was cold. Then it gradually grew louder and now it ticks all the time. I brought the car to our subaru dealer in ALASKA and they say it's a piston slap. Then they tried to tell me it was normal for the 1999's. I have an extented warranty threw subaru of america but they will no longer cover my car because they say an aftermarket intake voids out the warranty, even though the dealer already had done warranty work on the car in the past with it still on there.

So now my car is collecting dust in the garage because one of my spark plugs blew out and the threads are stripped. Everytime i try to screw one in it just breaks loose. The plug wire also burt out when i was drving on the freeway.

My options.....

I really am i need of help because i just moved to san francisco and i really don't know anyone. So i'm asking for help and advice from all of u. I talked to a japanese motor shop in south san francicso (japan parts usa ltd) and they can get me a japanese WRX engine w/ tranny and ecu for $1600. They also have a shop that will install it for $900. I also had got quotes from the dealer to fix the piston but hey want $3500 to replace the short block.

Any Suggestions???

So i guess what i asking is if any one here knows of shop to recomend or if someone is willing to help me take the motor out and have a machine shop fix it. Does anyone know of a subaru dealer here that tries to help people out and not srew them over. If anyone out there has any suggestions please reply i really need to get my car running again.

You can just pick up a brand new EJ25. I believe we have a couple of those lying around. That would be the easiest and time efficient if you want your car running asap. As for the JDM WRX motor that shop offered you, you are going to need a wiring harness as well if you want that motor to run with your cars electrical system. 1600 is a really good price for a JDMEJ20 but i doubt its anything above a ver 5. fyi, piston slap/knock is normal when the engine is cold. if it doesnt go away once it reaches normal operating temp it may be a problem. could just be a noisy valve train.

You may have diagnosed your problem without knowing it. If your spark plug is loose, it will leak compression and make a ticking noise that won't go away after warm up. I would suggest have a shop install a spark plug insert (a relatively easy job-just make sure the piston is down by inserting a screwdriver in the spark plug hole-turn over the engine by hand until the piston is down-apply grease to the insert tap to catch most of the shavings). Anyone who has worked on an old VW motor knows this trick. It's way cheaper than overhauling the the motor, and you havn't got anything to lose by trying it. Also, try running a bottle of Techron additive per tankful of gas for 2 tankfuls. This will clean out any carbon build up on the valves or combustion chambers (another common cause of ticking noise). The best rule of thumb is "try the easy stuff first".
