Post WRX - what class for Solo II

This is a legit question.

what class is 270-ish HP and AWD going to put a 2000MY WRX in? Would they even let it compete?

TIA

Super Stock or A Stock I think. Should fit right along in with either the S4's or the Camaro's & Vette's.

Well if you're talking about a real 2000 WRX (an imported one), I don't think they'll let you run it in any of the normal classes.
stock - not sold as a production car here in the states
street prepaired - same thing
prepared - can't "add" a turbo if there wasn't one already. Thinking that the car started as an American Impreza.
modified - I think you'll end up here..... Good luck. You'd better modify the hell out of it (trailer queen) if you want to be competitive.
Just take it road racing instead.

It will probably be in A Stock. It would have to be really magnificent to be in SS with the RX-7 TT, C5, etc. I kinda doubt that with long-travel suspension and macpherson struts all around. If they actually implement the proposed stock class changes, it would be either Group 2 or Group 3. Probably 2.

Hard to say where it would be in Street Prepared. I would guess BSP.

I say this because if it actually arrives in North America with the specs we've heard (2950lb, 240HP) it won't follow the classing of the Eclipse turbo AWD (3250lb, 190-210HP).

Of course they'll let it compete! It's a production car!

Ok now to answer the question...
First get the numbers straight:
I'm estimating the US WRX will boast 221 hp (with a high of 247 (japspec) and low of 210 (can't strangle it too much)).
It will weigh approx 2937 lbs.

The current 2.5RS competes in G-Stock (where it's uncompetitive) with 165HP,2800lbs, and AWD. It is NOT the car to have. Here's some of the hot cars in G-Stock:

Acura Integra Type R = GS, 195@8000, 130@7500, 2600 lbs, .075 hp/lb, .050 ft/lb, 15x6 rims, 225 tires, no neg camber but it does have the all important limited slip differential.

AWD DSM Eclipse/Talon = GS, 210@6000, 215@3000, 3100 lbs, .068 hp/lb, .069 ft lbs, 15x6.5 rims, 225 tires. Proven commodity.

Audi TT (AWD) = GS, 180@5500, 173@1950-4700 RPM (flat torque curve!), 2910 lbs, .062 hp/lb, .059 ft/lb, 16x7 rim standard = 245 tire, 17x7.5 rim with "performance" package = 245 tire, camber-challenged (not adjustable?).

WRX = 221@??, ???@??? RPM, ~2937 lbs, ~.075 hp/lb (same as TypeR), ??? ft/lb, 16 x ?? rim standard, camber??.

I believe the WRX "could" be classified here. However, there is some uproar about the TypeR's dominating the class, and moving them elsewhere. I belive the the DSMs would follow, and so would the WRX.

If not GS, then what about the rest of the classes?
I think the most likely candidate would be A-Stock.

A-Stock:
MR2 Turbo
Z3 2.8
Porsche Boxter
S2000
M3 (current, not the upcoming one)

This would be an entertaining, albeit challenging class to run in. Is the WRX the equal of the M3?

Oops wait the BMW M3 (E30), will be from AS to GS. Maybe the WRX _would_ find a best fit in GS then?

Regardless, quite a bit of my discussion above might be moot. Everyone please read this: http://www.scca.org/news/tech/seb/6-4-00.html
Click on Memo 1, and read the proposed class system overhaul.

Once you're done reading that, reply back here with your thoughts as to where the WRX would go. My first thoughts would be Class 3 or Class 5. Let's talk about it!

this isn't a RS/WRX hybrid.

Its a foreign market 270HP 2000MY WRX. It's tagged an Impreza GT, but it has the hot WRX motor. Stock suspension, everything. 4 doors.

I'd say it's running around 230-240HP right now on standard 93 octane premium, but the powertrain guys said she'll push 270 with racing fuel. I'm going to go find some at lunchtime.

We're gonna try to maybe bring it to a local event or two.

Ryan - Hey, try to bring it down to the MidWest Subaru Club autocross on Oct. 1st in Merrillville, IN. We need as many scoobs as possible and if you show up, I'm sure a LOT more will want to come just to see it. We're already looking towards the 15-20 area for scoobs (and normally they get 40-50 cars so it's a good percentage of the entire crowd already).

oh... so travis was the only one who interpreted the question correctly!

It is absolutely legal for E Mod. You may be able to run in Street Mod as well.

Ahh.. alright. I wrongly assumed you meant to be asking about the upcoming US WRX... wishful thinking on my part... BUT I really do want to discuss the classing of the US-spec WRX. So, shall we continue on this thread, or take it to a new one?

I won't have my US Spec WRX until January or so. It will be a 2002MY car, and the new body style. in the meantime I'm just trying to figure out where we can enter this beast I'm currently driving.

8Complex - I'd like to make it to as many auto-x as I can, so I'll do my best to make it to anything around the area. There are a few local club events up here in MI the next few weeks, so SCCA classing won't be as crucial.

It would be desired to stay in a stock class because the car has NO aftermarket mods. The suspension is nice, but not quite as hard as the STi V5 I have on my RS...

Sorry, your imported WRX will be a no-go in Stock classes (or Street Prepared):

===================
Cars running in Stock Category must have been series produced with normal road touring equipment capable of being licensed for normal road use in the United States, and normally sold and delivered through the manufacturer's retail sales outlets in the United States. Cars not specifically listed in Stock Category classes must have been produced in quantities of at least 1,000 in a 12-month period to be entered in the Stock Category.
=============

They might let it run in SM for grins, but you'd be illegal there too.

True, it initially looks like SM.. it is a sedans with four seats, four factory seat belts, not sports car based, and it meets the displacement and drivetrain requirements, but it fails on this requirement:

b) Vehicle must be legally registered for the street

So, good luck in E-Mod! Just compare your times Street Mod to see how you're doing.

I didn't ask because I know. Ryan is a FHI employee if I recall correctly, even better than being a SOA employee apparently.

M plates are manufacturers.

Colin is right (as usual)

got it through work.

Kartboy is kind of right too. At all of the local auto-x I have been too, none of the tech inspectors know much about subarus at all(your brother can cofirm this most likely), but it'd be hard to get the turbo and IC past them. If I really wanted to at any of these events I probably could have entered my RS (with STi V5 suspension, adjustable sway bars, etc) in G Stock and I doubt they would have caught it. the STS class seems pretty loose around here though, which IMHO is what makes it so fun.

anyhooo..., we're gonna try it one of these weekends and see what happens. should be interesting.

So, Ryan, does this mean the Impreza "GT" is your Daily Driver now? Thats sweet.

Seriously, last auto-x I went to (a while back- in april) The tech guys didnt know what the hell our Scoobies were! There were six impreza's there that day, and they all raced in STS, except for Doug, his wife took his car out in GS.

I think it would be hella-cool to put that car in STS. The Tech inspectors would probably hear everything under the hood before they saw it... Vrrrrrmmm- Pshh- Vrrrrrmmmm Pshhh.. A lot of em ask if it is turbo'd.
I cant wait to have a michigan meet again.. So are you gonna bring it to the auto-x on the 24th?

Ryan, what events in the next few weekends are you planning on taking it to? I would love to come see you put it through the paces. I am SERIOUSLY thinking about getting the new WRX when it comes out, this might just sell it for me. I'm even starting to like the new design! Never thought I'd say that. Please let me know. You can email me at: trent.guild@eds.com
Thanks!

well, the turbo won't around this weekend.

I will have an Outback Sport for the weekend. Sorry all.

the WRX is going back into the garage for the weekend.

So I guess I'll have my RS at the Corvette Club Auto-x on Sunday.

At least my GF will be happy!

Frank,

you'd probably still beat me even if I had the turbo. it can't hide my lousy driving and fear of braking!

although I did get kind of close to you last time in the rain!

Well to help you gauge how a WRX do in an autoX, Ver. III went to a few autoX in Toronto area and he competes with modified ITRs, 240Z etc. At least the last event he did. Well needless to say, his WRX RS trounced everyone in that catagory and left early cus it got bored?!

No turbo this weekend? EAT MY DUST!
SOA will fix the door, how they don't know yet, depends on the damage under the interieur.
The mechanic said that he could help with a turboinstallation, but not in the shop. Makes sense.
BTW, they do stock gauge pod housings.
