Question prodrive pp 3 vs. cobb (stage 2) reflash + similar mods?

Hi fellas,

Need help with this one...

I'm deciding whether to purchase a prodrive power pack stage 3 as I am impressed with their numbers and believe their products are closest to factory. I have two concerns though: 1) the 19 psi the ppp3 is tuned for. (Isn't that kind of high?) and 2) the cost 2500 not including tax.

Would the hp output be similar in power and cheaper if i purchase similar components offered in the power pack? (i.e up pipe, downpipe, exhaust, cobb stage 2 reflash, samco intercooler hoses.)

with the same costs maybe a vf34 package kinda like the one offered by gruppe S?

FYI, i just want a daily driver, capable of whooping stock sti's and lancers.

thanks and happy holidays

Neither of the options you suggest will make an otherwise stock WRX faster than an STi.

Prodrive claims that their PPP3 will "keep up" with an STI to about 100mph or so.

As far as Cobb versus Prodrive, I generally believe that this is a matter of faith. More people around here have used Cobb (I'm sure price is one reason), so you are likely to get a strongly biased response.

I will say that engine ECU's are far more complex than you can imagine. Reverse engineering is one thing. Know-how from a designer is something else altogether.

If you value experience as measured in years, that's no contest. You know who has more experience.

You can probably spot my bias. I don't own either product, but as an engineer working on software for various car ECU's, I am always strongly biased towards those who have even the slightest bit of "inside" edge. But those around here who are extremely experienced in tuning may argue that it is not that magical and that the community has figured out all the ins-and-outs of the Subaru engine ECU, largely negating any "inside" edge.

My biases aside, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Cobb, the prodrive is nice but not worth the money. After riding in both the stage 2 and 3 prodrive cars I was sold on them.... untill I got a ride in a cobb beast. Its what half the cost?? Cobb cracked the ecu in house too...

I voted for the Prodrive stage three simply because I have one. Top quality if you ask me. I get boost at 1600-1700 RPM. Don't worry about the 19 psi, it only peaks there for a little while, it start to taper at about 4900 all the way to redline, so that the fuel can keep up. I have an EGT gauge, and have noticed no strange readings. You can read my review here....
