Cool Went to Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta....

All I can say is WOW. I was sitting at home on Saturday morning, flipped on Speedvision to watch the Cyprus coverage, and then I see the American LeMans Series starting at Road Atlanta. I immediately called up a buddy, jumped into the car and headed for Braselton GA.

OK, wow. Saw three 911 turbos and a Lamborghini Miura before we even got close to the track. The parking lots were full of sweet cars, I could go on about those for a while, but I'll spare you. I'll just say that I probably saw upwards of 75 M3s while I was there, and they were the economy cars of the bunch. Saw an Ur-Quattro, a 450hp tuned S4, several Porsche GT3s, the Beetle rally car from the commercials, an Evo V, and a full paddock of Subies from the Panoz/Subaru driving school. The WRX-Sti they had was sweet, let me tell you. There were different "paddock" areas for the different marques, where if you had a particularly nice example of a certain car you could park there, there were separate areas for Porsches, Vipers, Audis, BMWs, Corvettes, etc.

$45 bucks to get in was a bit steep, but the race was well worth it. The sound was incredible, you could identify a car coming around a bend by the sound of the engine before you could see it. The Audis have a rich buttery tone that's not too loud, the Porsche GTS cars had an extremely loud grating roar with explosive blatting on the downshifts, the Panoz sounded like thunder, a deep growling note. My favorite was the BMW prototype with its high whining note, it sounded much like an F1 car, but with loud barks on the downshift. Interesting that they used one of the Art Cars for the race, it was the one with the silver foil lettering on it.

The Petit LeMans was more fun by far than the Canadian Grand Prix, I went to that a few years ago. F1 is just not as much fun to watch in my opinion, though I enjoy that too. If any of you have a chance to go see one of these ALMS races, GO! You'll have a blast.

I'll post pictures as soon as I get them developed, hopefully in the next day or so.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I figured out they were going to be in Texas like the day before, and I already had too many things going on that weekend. I think it would be cool to go and plan on making it next year. Glad to hear it's a good time!

I was there too, Ditto to everything that you said above. The sounds were fantastic, and the smells mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Were you there when the deer ran out on the track in turn 11? My ears are stil ringing. First class cars everywhere. I didn't get to see the WRX-STi...where was it?? Oh well. I saw a nice SVX though. I drooled around the porsche parking lot for about 45 minutes, untill I got word that one of the GTS Vipers was on its roof. Fun stuff. Did anyone here go last year, I remembered lots more vendors being there then.

Thumbs up

I was Shooting an event that coincided with its Inagural(sp?) running three years ago, for Panoz. I had the GREATEST time. Saw the 98 911 GT1 but I was on the other side of the track when it flipped. Yes the Sounds were just as AWE inspiring. You could hear the Panoz cars coming plenty of time before they were in front of you, but the 911 GT1 had a very erie silence as it lapped much faster then anyone else. All you'd hear was a swishing sound from the turbos, extreamly silent but real fast. I wanted to go this year but work wouldn't allow a short trip to GA . Glad you guys had fun--I'll hopefully join you next year.

i was at watkins glen this year for the motorola cup event and the Grand American Road Racing league was also there for the 6 hours at the glen. the WSC cars a absolutely amazing. whenever there was a full course caution it would only take about 3 laps for them to start lapping the tail end of the GT-2 cars.
my buddy's R was about 40 yds from the course they would be setting the alarm off.

all of the different LeMans type leagues are so enjoyable to watch because there is constant passing the entire race due to the different classes out there.

STiTkacik- The STi was over on the highway side of the paddock/pit area, up at the Subaru driving school building.

I just took my film to the camera shop, I should have a PhotoCD tonight... hope the action shots came out, I was using 400 speed 24mm.

Arrow

Ok, let's see if this works....

They're a bit blurry, I only had the point-and-click. It doesn't do too well on 150mph objects.

Big block Ford V8!

I love the American Le Mans. It is so cool. I always cheer for Panoz.
