Smile WRX...this just in

I don't know how true this is, but I was just reading Auto World Weekly and on pg 2 of the Oct 10th edition and it says: "In street form the sll-wheel-drive sport sedan enjoys 250 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and clocks 0-to-60-mph times in the mid-5-second range, according to sources. At the same time, the WRX has earned a "low emission vehicle" (LEV) rating in Japan. ... It sells for around $24,000 in Japan. How many will come to the U.S., and at what price have not yet been decided. - Boyd Harnell"

I don't know about you guys (and girls), but for an Impreza in the mid-to-high twenties that can run with a M3, I can live with the styling.

So in the US detuned form, we should be looking at ~6 second range 0-60, with the same handling characteristics.

Ooops . . .

Its a good thing I keep the tissues next to the computer.

Thumbs up

Get the new issue of CAR magazine as it has a test drive along with pictures of the interior and action shots of it. They talk rather highly of it other than the same complaint everybody else does...the headlights. I posted a quick write up on the HKS turbo kit...CALL post.

Road & Track in the July or Aug '00 issue quoted mile for USA model in under 14 seconds.?

As for the WRX running with new M3....well... maybe in the snow or rain.

I think the E46M3 does 0-60 in 4.8 and 0-100 in 11.9 seconds.

I hope the WRX is all 247hp that the UK gets and is all the magazines say it is!

Actually it wont be detune and if so very little especially if it recieved the lev level rating. i had spoke to a few dealer friends about this particular thing and they sad exactly what i wanted to here if the emission are right then there is no changed required so the car comes as it is and why would subaru devote a whole other line to a lower model when they can just ship the same car with no hastle. I would look to be happy with the horsepower when it comes out. i wont be able to afford it but its always cool to drean about it. Hehe im pretty sure the price tag will go up look what they did to they did to the nsx and the skyline they both jump up about 10 grand more. i think the subire will arrive round 26 maybe 27 but thats my 2 cents.

Not sure why the big issue of the new WRX being a LEV. For the past few years its been required that all cars built in Japan for the Japanese market be LEV's from the factory so even the last 280hp version was a LEV. Now I don't know how hard it will be to get it within the new CA laws but its not like it would be a huge leap. The only thing different should be the US inner beam weighing more and less hp to run on the sulfer ridden US gas. You can run the EJ20 on the 94 US octane but not at any high boost levels while using the orignal fuel maps.

No M3 does 0-60 in under 5 seconds. The new one is claimed at 5.3 or so. The most accelerative BMW ever built is the Z8, 4.9 seconds.

The 220 hp Impreza is not a real match for the new M3, but it costs much much less.

The 280bhp WRX-STi is definitely a match for the M3, bad roads or not. 0-100 is even, and the Imp has the advantage at the launch.

BMW's offical is 0-100km (62mph) in 5.2seconds. It is the fastest Mcar ever, which means it is faster than the M5 which does 0-60 in well under 5 seconds. This is really not the issue of this thread, but..-

Car Zone put BMW's "fastest saloon in the world" M5 to the test. The comparison car? An Impreza WRX. To make a long story short, the WRX beat the M5 by 4 car lengths at the quarter mile.

Or was it the M3? Hmmmm.....

Here's the deal:

The M5 is currently the fastest M-car ever. It does 0-60 in 5.0 seconds or so. It has a 4.9 liter V8 with 400hp.

The new M3 is the fastest M3 ever. It makes about 345bhp and does 0-60 in 5.3. It is slower in acceleration than the M5.

The Z8 has the same engine as the M5, 400hp V8. And it weighs less. It is quicker. It does 0-60 4.7-4.9.

The Z8 is the most accelerative road BMW ever built. It is faster than all the M-cars. It is not an M-car, however...

The WRX-STi is definitely a match for the M3.

Had I my pick of Bavarians, I'd probably end up with an M5. The Z8 is cool and all, but I wouldn't want it.

In the showdown between the WRX and the M5 I think the article noted that elevation may have played a role in the Scoobie's dominance over the Bimmer. Something about thin air or something. Can anybody verify that?

the new M3 is noted as baing 0-60 in 4.8 seconds in a recent test drive in AutoCar out of the UK. the higher 0-62 numbers are based on 0-100kph. as previously noted, BMW tends to under-call their acceleration figures.

the M5 has been clocked at 4.7 by many sources. the Z8 being lighter than the M5 by a fair bit is faster still, at around 4.5 I believe.

the new M3 will likely be 0-60 around 4.8 seconds. it's supposed to do 0-100 in 11.5 sec, as compared to ~11.0 for the M5.

needless to say it will be a very fast car, albeit an expensive one at $50-55k with normal options. I rather have a WRX & a second car.

Subaman - E46M3 "BMW says 62 mph arrives in about 5.2 seconds"

BMW is alway conservative and is quoting 0-100km. it takes .2-.4 less to get to Sixty MPH, plus the conservative BMW approach.

None of this is related to the Turbo Impreza which will come to america, just pointing out that you are not correct (you are outnumbered!).

the fastest BMW is definately the Z8. it weighs 400+ lbs less than the M5 with the same engine.

Subaman,

BMW's claims are usually conservative. They claimed a 6+ second 0-60 for the E36 M3, and US mags regularly did sub 6 second runs. I'd expect the new M3 to be substantially quicker than low 5s.

But again, this is an apples to oranges comparison (WRX to M3). The new M3 will be an easy $50G car.

Aren't there faster saloons than the M5? If the WRX STi beats it...surely the EVO can beat it too right since it beats an STi. Therefore, M5 is not the fastest saloon in the world (BTW i just saw it's commercial....) but the Mitsu EVO VI or wutever is.

Question

I always thought the Nissan Skyline R34 was the fastest? Doesn't it beat the Mitsubishi?
