Default Cargo bike rack - DYI

As an Impreza convert, I already have 2 Yakima Copperhead roof rack for my bike. So paying almost $300 to get the whole new bike rack system was unjustifyable... So what to do? Go to Ace Hardware and get L-bracket, bolt them with an inch spacer (sturdy one) to clear the bed liner, put on what I already had. Wow, I just spent $5 to create this whole system. FYI, the mount-only parts (a huge L-bracket with 2 points boltdown) cost almost $160. DIY works as good as the genuine Subaru bracket...

No way to get around the bed extender, though.

I had a Thule system from my previous car. I just went on their site and plugged in the Baja and it gave the recommended solution. Then i just ordered all the parts i didn't have, to go with the front bar. I think the extra parts came to maybe $20.

I'll take a picture tomorrow in the light.

Oh, that solution works for Thule? I browsed through Yakima site and didn't see such - all I saw was bed-lip mount (drill a couple of holes). Maybe I can steal your idea... Thanks!

Yeah it worked out great. Take a look at these pics, you might be able to get away with using the Thule stock adapters with your Yakima equip.

The Yakima and Thule systems are different in only 1 way. The Yakima system uses round toobs and the Thule system uses square toobs. You should be able to get new towers for your old system and get it to work on the roof rails, but it will cost about $150 to $200, but you can use all the rest of your old Yakima equitment.

Also, FYI, Subaru uses Yakima and Thule equiptment for their rack equitment and I think that they are now branding them with the subaru name now days. A few years ago they didn't and it just depended on the dealiership and what they stocked.
