Default Best 5MP digital camera? Canon G5? Nikon Coolpix 5700? Or?

I'm in the market for a 5MP camera and am looking seriously at the Nikon Coolpix 5700 or the Canon G5. I hear the Electronic Viewfinder of the Nikon is a disadvantage, as it eats battery power and it's hard to get a true focus. I'd be shooting relatively slow moving vehicles with it, in terms of action, for the most part.

Looking to spend no more than $700 (Nikon will probablt be used, therefore) and looking to se if anyone has experience with either of these, or has another suggestion. Thanks...and I have checked www.epinions.com and www.dpreview.com too.

getting a 5mp camera over a 4mp camera is pretty pointless. unless you're the kinda person that HAS to have the latest and greatest. my suggestion to you would be get the canon a80 for ~350 bucks and do just about all the things you can do with the g5...for almost 300 bucks cheaper. the g5 has a 4x zoom compared to the a80's 3x zoom...and some other things. but none of it is worth ~300 bucks in my opinion. buy they a80 and spend the money you saved on something else you love.

The G5 has a hotshoe flash... the A80 is only a 4mp camera not a 5.... the G5 has more expandibility with bigger lenses... the G5 uses a Li-Ion battery that stays inside the camera instead of the A80's AA batteries that have to be removed/replaced.

If you really want to get serious and get a kickass camera that can grow with you as you learn more and do more, spend the extra cash and get the Canon Digital Rebel. It's a Digital SLR with all the functionality for $1000... makes me wish I hadn't bought my G3 and had waited for the Rebel instead

My Sony P-10 is 5.0 MP. Picture quality is great, and the movie mode is the best on the market..I feel. It cost me $500 back in March

I used to have a Sony 707, and although it took great pictures, it was an unweildy piece of crap.

I say get a Canon (I have a Digital Rebel now)

I got a Canon G5 for Christmas. I love it...great picture quality, and can work great in manual mode, or auto (point and shoot). I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cash over the A80 for most people, unless you really want to use the manual features.

Here's two more sources for information, I actually prefer imaging resource over dpreview. If you're going to shoot action beware of slow shutter response times in most of these point and shoot digital cameras. That''s why i love and still use my EOS RT. And that's an advante the digital SLR has over the point and shoot ones.

A great camera that i would add to your list is the Olympus C-5060. Camera has a super wide angle lens, with 4x optical zoom, equivalent to a 27-110mm lens on a 35mm camera. Wide angle lenses are extremely useful. More useful than a 4x that goes to 140mm IMO.
