Just finished installing my Perrin turbo inlet hose the car ran fine and I thought I got the P0171 code out but after filling my car with fuel the cruise control light started blinking no CEL this time. WTF could this be now?

Ok so I got an 08 wrx.......its got a cat less down pipe and I have been running cobbs stage two map no problem minus over boosting in fourth. I was running just open down pipe and just replaced the spark plugs and it ran fine......today I had put the stock cat back on so I could take a three hour trip to jacksonville and it ran fine the whole trip up.......now I get in my car and its idling rough and throwing a p0171 code.......my access port is reading 14.5-14.8 cruising but its at 20.x at idle.
I have no clue please help!

I need to share my experience with this one.
My CEL would only come on at idle after a drive, I had a rough idle, but the car never stalled on me, fuel consumption was good, etc..

I went through hell trying to find the issue until I started spraying TB cleaner around the intake manifold and TGVs....

Turned out to be a massive vacuum leak on the intake manifold gasket.
it's so big that it's almost ridiculous !

Its probably due to incorrect warranty work that was performed on the car (when it was under warranty!) when I had my shortblock replaced completely. Cheap ass dealership probably didn't bother to replace the gaskets...

see for your self. bottom gasket is from the passenger side IM. IT was thorn on both cylinders by about 7 mm ( inch for you yankees!).

if you had fuel line warranty work done, dealer may have not completely removed old gasket, which may cause vacuum leak....

This sounds like my problem exactly. I cleaned the maf pretty darned well and it still has some really bumpy behavior at partial boost from 4-5k, but no CEL yet...

Thanks all. Great thread.

Thanks all. Great thread.
After reviewing a couple other threads, especially "how often do you clean your maf", I took it out again and cleaned it a bunch of times inside and out. I mean I soaked the sensing elements like crazy with maf cleaner. Today, it's like wheeeee
I'm 99% certain just a dirty maf sensor was the culprit of some seriously stumbly bumpiness at about 4k rpm in boost

I am having intermittent CEL issue where car would throw P0171 CEL after driving for 30-40 miles while cruising on highway...

I replaced fuel filter, cleaned MAF, air filter, etc. Keeps throwing CEL. Car idles and drives perfectly fine though...

This is annoying since inspection is due in November.

I am thinking about replacing AFR sensor next, but it's only 28k miles old....

not a noob question some people don't even know about them...get it done by a mechanic that has the smoke test machine, which not many do because it's expensive and you don't really get to use it that often, hence why they'll charge a sometimes steep price. There is also a diy way I think it involves carb cleaner but I don't know about that you can google it.

Carb cleaner is what I used to find mine. Just spray it around hoses and various gaskets while the car is running. If the sound of the engine changes or the car wants stall when you spray it, there is probably a leak around where you are spraying.

Here is what I did today...

Removed TMIC and checked all hoses.
Replaced PCV
Removed map pressure sensor and found out that one of the bolt was loose. Not sure if that might be the source of P0171.
Next thing I am going to try is O2 sensor.

Sprayed the TB cleaner around all the hoses no change at all and so far no CEL. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Wish you good luck.

My car's due for inspection tomorrow, but I am still battling with CEL issue. Hopefully new O2 sensor will fix the problem.

Super new owner to my WRX. Was fine till I got my hands on it woot.

It has an AEM intake, the long ram style. I'm afraid of those sucking up water around here - it happened to my Celica with an extremely similarly designed intake and bent a rod.

So where the coupler is, I put the filter on instead. Looks great, good spot. While I was there, I cleaned and re-oiled the K&N filter. I also replaced 2 vac hoses with some nice silicone hosing I originally bought for my s2000 - which is mostly all silicone now with no problems. It's not low grade ebay stuff, nice and thick.

Just kiddy stuff, never imagined it would spawn a problem. But as soon as I did that I felt the car change - sputtery, jerky at times. Then the CEL came on. Our good friend P0171.

On the road to fixing it. First thing I tried was putting the original hard as a rock hoses back on. Then clearly the ECU (I just unbolted the battery terminal and left it for a while?). Was still jerky, but not CEL for 80 miles. Then it returned.

I just sprayed the MAF, reset the ECU and will test it out later tonight.

Next will be returning the intake to it's original design, followed by spark plugs (bought those anyway since I don't know when they were last done).

This is on a 2002 WRX, 134,000 miles.

Hopefully can get this resolved without too much headache. Sucks having problems with a newly purchased vehicle!

EDIT: As somewhat expected, the MAF cleaner did nothing. I'm going to contact a buddy a couple states over who likely has a stock air box I can try. I don't want to tune my car just got a CAI, not worth it to me.

FYI - AEM CAI is what's causing P0171 in your car. Your car needs to be properly tuned for CAI.

FWIW:

Short Version
My 2002 WRX manual (3.5in turbo back pipe, JET reflashed ECU, K&N cone intake with big pipe) threw this lean code. Turned out to be the low-restriction intake as indicated in various threads.

Long Version
I bought the car with the above mods, drove for 2 months of trouble-free miles with the mods and got no code. Then this CEL code came with increasing frequency until it would come on after ~45 miles and stay on. The car always ran awesome with - driveability issues and symptoms.

First I used stater fluid and visually inspected for vacuum leaks (nothing found).

Second, despite the excellent writeup I found (see below), I decided to go for an expensive repair next and replace the front O2 sensor (~$250 Bosch from Napa). I did this thinking "Well, the CEL didnt come on for two months, now it is so it must be something slowly failing". I replaced the sensor (difficult, very stuck inside the pipe) and CEL came back.

Third (after looking for more leaks) I decided to try out the 2nd easiest theory and assume the aftermarket intake was the cause (again, I was thrown off by the CEL coming up after 2 months of trouble-free modified intake miles). Not wanting to spend more money, I thought I could simulate a stock intake by restricting the low-restriction intake somehow. I simply put a plastic grocery bag around the outside of the cone intake to cover it up like with a blanket. Bingo, the code went away and stayed away for 2 weeks straight now. Now that I proved to myself this was the issue, I will come up with something more permanent like a stock WRX intake.

Thank you NASIOC posters for your help!

Update to my above problem.

I ended up reinstalling the lower portion of the AEM intake, resetting the ECU - and viola. The car is now behaving normally again.

I couldn't believe that chopping the intake at the half way point would cause such an issue. It must have been more efficient being shorter, causing it to lean out.

Crazy Subaru's. Seems like it should be able to compensate!

Oh well, it works. I'm leaving it as is!

Strange? MAF sensors are retardly sensitive to any and all changes.
