Talking Tanabe Ultra Medalion Catback

I looked for a long time to find a catback that was light, had the look I wanted, and had a silencer. I guess a couple months ago Tanabe came out with there new Ultra Medalion series of catbacks and I was immediately interested from the looks of the canister. It has a nice burnt titaniam metal tip, and cut at an angle, which I just love. The canister is also titanium and fairly small compared to other N1 style catbacks. Welds on the canister are perfect and look amazing.

The piping is all 304 stainless, and the welds on the flanges are very good and uniform. I've seen cosmetically nicer looking welds on a Fujitsubo catback, but really once the catback is on the car you'll never see them anyways.

First thing I did when my catback arrived was to put it on the bathroom scale. The weight of the whole system weighs in a tick under 20 lbs, compared to the stock system which tipped the scales at 43 lbs. Shaving 23 lbs off the car, I was very impressed.

Fitment and installation was a breeze. Typically I don't have much luck when working on cars, but my friend and I put on the catback, and it fit like a OEM part. Clearance around the rear diff was good, and all the hangers were in the right places. The tip was perfectly centered on the rear bumper first try, so we bolted it all together and shook the system to check for any clearance problems. Everything looked good, except for a minor clearance issue with the rear exhaust hanger bracket clicking against one of the rear hanger rubber mounts if the exhaust moved a lot. Not a major problem at all so I left it alone. Other then that the exhaust fit just fine, and didn't move around enough to clunk against anything.

First time firing up the car without the silencer installed was awesome. The boxer burble was very pronounced and the car sounded like a Group N rally car. The tone is very deep and not raspy at all when revved. Driving without the silencer is a little on the loud side for my tastes, but it sounds amazing. With the silencer installed the car was nearly as quite as stock. Very liveable and the only indication of the catback from the cabin is from the slightly enhanced boxer burble.

As for performance gains, there isn't really much to be felt from just a catback. I think driveablility is improved as turbo spool-up is quicker and boost builds smoother. The top end is slightly better, but don't expect huge gains.

I'm very happy with this catback as it looks, and sounds fantastic. I wanted a light exhaust that wouldn't blow the bank and this one fit the bill perfectly.

I found it on Ebay. The tuning shop selling it is based out of Oregon, really good guys to talk to. It was selling for $600 and I can find you the link if you are interested.

Update about the exhaust. Everything still sounds and looks great, but at very specific engine rpms (like when the engine is being shut-off) the the catback vibrates a bit and I think the silencer pipe rattles against the inside of the canister. Not a big deal at all and only happens for a second. I'll check if this is true when I have some fun with the silencer out!

zuffy, do you get the problem of the exhaust rattling and "squeaking" during idle? I think its because the exhaust hooks on the canister are clamped on instead of welded.

No squeaking. The exhaust is quite secure on the clamp and hangers. I think the design is very good as clearance and fitment are excellent. I'll inspect it for clearances again on my next oil change.

couldn't quite see from the pics, but are these straight out design like Greddy, or are they angled out like the HKS TI?

I figured out the rattling problem. Some of the rattling was from the bracket that supports the muffler canister. On the left hand exhaust hanger, there the bracket where the rubber exhaust hanger is connected to. When the exhaust shifts a little, then the muffler bracket sometimes come into contact with the exhaust hanger bracket. I made a small rubber spacer to keep the brackets apart.

The other rattle came from the silencer. If the silencer isn't centered properly in the canister then there will be some noise, as the silencer will have a slight gap between the canister tip, and the silencer flange. Once it is centered and properly tightened, then no noise!

Off course without the silencer, the car makes all the right noises!

I've never heard the Racing Medallion in person myself, but I have heard the Hyper Medallion. With the silencer installed the Ultra Medallion is about the same as the Hyper Medallion.

I have the super racing medalion, it sounds soo good!! i would recommend it.. it definately has that deep rumble. Everyone says there is no gains from just a catback, but i swear my car has accellerated and ran smoother with it..
thats just my input.
