Default 86 GL in 4wd.....

To start - 86 carbed 5spd 4hi/4lo GL wagon.....

Trying to narrow the problem, but I'm kinda stupid on my GL compared to my Legacy....so, when in 4wd on the GL and I do low speed sharp cornering, the car feels like its binding and almost locks up to a stop. I then have to go straight for a bit to put her back in 2wd. Is it the diffs binding, not enough gas or what? Thanks in advance.

Don't feel bad about having a hard time understanding the old-school Scoobs. I'm still educating myself on my XT, since I've been spoiled rotten with my Legacy

The 4WD system in 80's Scoobs is a true 4WD system. That means at least one wheel in the front and one wheel in the back have to turn at the same speed. It's a completely mechanical connection of gears between the two. That's the cause of your binding. My XT, when it's in 4WD, refuses to turn sharply from a stop on pavement, without squealing tires anyway...

The reason why your Legacy doesn't do this is because it's an AWD system. Any wheel can spin at a different speed than any other wheel (to some extent). They're connected by fluid rather than gears.

So do your transmission and CV axles and such a favor, and leave it in 2WD on pavement. It's really not necessary anyway.

It was actually on a iced/snowy parking lot while turning sharp to pull into a spot @ school but I'll keep that in mind. I try not to drive in 4 when it's not needed. Thanks
