Default Borla Catback on 04 WRX...First Thoughts

Hey guys, I just thought I would write a little review on the Borla Catback. My first impression is "WHOAA!" Sound is awesome, a little on the loud side, but deep and throaty/burbly. Notice quicker spool up, 5th pulls a little harder. Have not gotten on it too much on the lower end, but oh will that change! It is noticeable in the cabin, but not overpowering at all. I have my cd player on and can hear it just fine.

To sum it up:

First impression....awesome exhaust, great price, hard to beat.

Eric

yes i can hear it, but if i turn the volume up just a bit, its not too bad...i guess its motivation for some upgrading in the audio department, but i just love the sound too much!

I am assuming that you have the single tip muffler?

It works well on the 03 too :-)

I put it on in 20 minutes with a lift.

I think first gear breaks loose a little easier. And the turbo spins up faster for sure.

I notice the power in 5th gear cause I use cruise control for 13 miles on up and down hills, and the rpms stay up a little higher

Glad someone else noticed the RPM difference, I thought that they were higher. Around 75mph I am at 3000, I know it was less with my stock exhaust.

It all depends on if you have the cats or not. IMHO most exhausts arent that loud with all of hte cats. Once you start deleting them.......

Do i need to spray anything on the bolts or what not to make sure everything is loose enough when it comes to install? i don't want to end up breaking a bolt or not being able to get them out. My car is an MY04 so i doubt anything is overly rusted yet. just wanted opinions.

Thanks
Ian

for a catback you won't have any cel or sensor problems. When i did my axel-back on my 04 nothing was rusted but the bolts are a little tight and will need a little elbow grease on those nuts. So some wd-40 will help. I suggest just using a long arm type thing for some good leverage. Let me know what you think of the sound level b/c i have a turbo-xs axel back and i think its too quiet...

I got it on today...looks great and sounds even better. My concerns were on the heat shields. do i need to put them back on? I noticed most them although held by a clamp were also welded on. Any suggestions?

The sound is great. its really deep. Sound levels inside actually aren't very bad...windows up or down. In lower rpms the sound level outside and inside is by far louder then the upper rpms. I also was surprised to find that going down interstates there isn't a ton of droning which is def a plus on long trips. As a whole i am very happy with the product. I have the stock head unit (6 disc changer) and a JL 12w3 sub. I can hear the music on volume 2 but to get good sound inside 6 usually does the trick...a lil bit of exhaust in the background.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what to do about the heat shields?

I hope this answers most of your questions focus 4. if i can figure out how i'll try to post up a sound clip of it at rest and moving out on the road inside and out. i'll try my best.

Thanks
Ian
