There is a company out in NY called sun International (I think) that claim to be able to get these - as well as cosworth escorts, evolutions and renault 5 turbo 2's..... not sure what the deal is with them.

cheers

from what I know, it was only made to japanese spec, RHD. The only one in the states is a press car that SOA owns, and it's RHD as well. There is no LHD 22b.

Note: It isn't street legal either.

Wolve80. Is correct.

There where only 424 22Bs made all are RHD.

400 in the original run. Mine is #133

16 Type UK

8 for the international distributors. The SOA is one of these, which is why it does not have a numbered plaque on the dashboard

Post

This thread just reminded me of something I have always forgotten to post. I think I was burned by SOA's 22b on the way back from Englishtown one night about a year ago. All I saw was this blue Subaru coupe, I assumed in was an RS. It pulled up about a carlength ahead of me in the left lane (we are both doing about 60 mph on the highway, I was in the middle lane). I couldn't see the driver, but I immediately noticed the "Vehicle Manufacturer" NJ licence plate on the back. WTF?

Before I could mentally process that information, the driver just punched it, and put about 5 carlengths between us in about half a second. I immediately floored it, but he just kept putting distance between us like I was standing still. Suddenly I see him turn right, into a mall parking lot. I look to the right as I drive past, and notice that the guy has turned left and is now running parallel to the road in the parking lot. Then I realize he is driving faster through the lot (it was empty, this was about midnight) than I was going on the road! I look down at the speedometer, I was doing 75 at that instant.

I assumed that it must have been a turbocharged RS, but when I saw pics of the 22b from the Maryland meet, I wondered if I did get destroyed by the infamous SOA 22b. Anyone else see this car on the road?

The SOA car isn't number 13 it's simply one of the 8 distributor cars that didn't have number plaques. Hence the confusion

The Type Uk cars are numbered 1 to 16.

Interestingly there are three cars that have 0 number on their plaque. They belong to

David Richards, Colin McCrae and Nicky Grist. So I really can say that I drive the same car as Colin

Question

Two things...Impresario, when you looked at the driver, was he on the right or the left? That would REALLY give it away whether it was the 22B or not.
Also, you CAN bring the 22B here and have it street legal...read the Road & Track issue for May 2000 (page 122). You can have it here under the "Show and Display" standard, meaning you can drive it for 2500 miles a year MAX...and all you have to do is pass emissions...shouldn't be TOO tough (although would take some work I'm sure.)

I think I'd have a REAL hard time keeping it under that 2,500mile/year mark. That's it... swap the VIN with an RS, I can't stand it anymore.

Richard, if you want to bring your car over for a show, I will volunteer my car and VIN # to be switched onto your car and mine sent back in it's place as long as I get to drive the 22B.

It's the show display clause that I was going to bring it in under. However they added the EPA requirement to it. DUH...

Oh and don't try bringing one in as a rally car it aint't gonna be easy. Ask the guy that is trying to bring one in to compete at Pikes Peak..

So my little baby is staying in the UK until I take it back to Australia with me..

New Jersey plate- 22(little 95)DTM -This is the right hand drive 22B-STI. July 1999 issue of I think..., actually, I have no idea, It has a little steering wheel at the end of the article. So there is, or was one in Jersey, which is where SOA headquarters are, so makes sense.

I'm sure if there was a way to get that Damn car over here, Richard would have figured it out by now. So the deal with "sun international" must be non existant.

Richard can bring his 22b here anytime he wants, he just can't register it for the street... as evidenced by the ever-growing numbers of ProRally Lancer EVOs and WRX STi's.
