is this replacing the actual mid pipe where the cats are located or is it directly after that the straight pipe from cat to rear section?

The Borla cat back system replaces everything from the third cat back. This is the 3" pipe with the resonator that goes between the third cat and the muffler.

This will not work with older borla systems. I called the tech line and asked if it would work and they said no. The hush is 3" and the older single tip is 2.5". You could get a restrictor and rig it to work but it would not be the same.

The resonator could be used by someone to modify an existing 3"system to make it quieter. I used the muffler to make my TXS turbo back 3" all the way back.

The flange is 2 1/2" but Borla made the on a sepatrate piece of pipe that slip fits into the mid pipe which makes it easy to change.

Yes it does, and i had to manage this (bottle neck) to fit my PDE.

Find a local stainless welder whos willing, and have them stamp you a flange and attatch a 6" length 3" stainless pipe to it. I had this pruduced locally for $20.
This way for whatever reason i can use the Borla system with the 3" downpipe or use the bottle neck with the stock downpipe, (if need be).

The borla hush performs beautifully, no drone, no loss.

You will be happy with this product.

You will be! -Yoda 1980
